    Bandsaw in Northampton required

Max depth of cut of my bandsaw is 30cm, not directly related to the wheel size - which is 18" as suggested by Marcros. A bigger bandsaw would be nice but it's already rather big for my workshop! Russ - good luck with your piece of oak. Duncan

    Bandsaw in Northampton required

Too big for my 18" bandsaw. Have you considered using a chainsaw? Duncan

    STARTRITE 275 TABLE SAW

An induction motor that size will briefly be drawing 70 to 100A on startup and that is why your 20A MCB (miniature circuit breaker) is tripping. You will need a dedicated 20A or 16A socket and increase the rating of the MCB, and/or change it from what is almost certainly a type B to a type C. In...

Where to find aluminium profile for rip fence?

Some bandsaw manufacturers e.g record Power, use hi/lo fences as standard. Could be priced more reasonably than Felder perhaps? Duncan

Something a bit different in yew

I really like it - there is interest in the shape and in the different textures, to say nothing of the yew itself. And, rather oddly perhaps, but I think the upside down picture shows a brilliant "slumped" form almost as if it is made of heat-softened plastic. Think I may have a go at something...

    Sad news from MAC timbers

That is truly dreadful news. I don't know Mike and Rene well, but have been over there a couple of times, just as a customer, and, from what I know of the situation, it is worse than "just" the business being closed down and the loss of a beautiful home. They are lovely people and I very much...

    Chucks

Jamie Four days ago, I had an email from RS offering a Patriot for £159.60 c/w the usual 2" jaws and screw chuck, and also with a 7/8" steb chuck to fit the Patriot - effectively, a free steb chuck worth around £40. I've never used a steb chuck myself, but some people love them, so it may be...

    Well Done Robert Sorby

Interesting - I emailed Sorby so wasn't aware that there's been a batch of faulty pinions, but it is reassuring to know that it is not likely to occur on my other chuck, which is quite a bit older and undoubtedly a different batch. Duncan

    Well Done Robert Sorby

Amidst the regular stories of bad support from manufacturers and suppliers there are sometimes good reports - and this is one such. A pinion tooth in my just over one year old Patriot chuck broke off; don't know why, I'm not usually THAT heavy handed and my other, older, Patriot has given no...

How long is a No 8 plane

I questioned the length and he replied saying "I have uploaded another photo which should answer your question, must be a special edition :)" He has indeed posted the additional picture and it's pretty clear that the plane has been cut short. However, he hasn't posted the question so it is also...

    Polishing Microcrystalline Wax

Bob - Thanks for your advice, very useful. I've been using the oil to add warmth to woods and highlight the grain better before waxing, but if sanding sealer can do the same job and quicker, then I'll give it a go - I've got stacks of the stuff anyway. As for the buffing - oh dear, more...

    Polishing Microcrystalline Wax

Thanks Chas, that makes a lot of sense as some of these blemishes appear on surfaces that I thought I'd got as close to perfect as possible. In future I'll wait for days as you suggest, or use something other than oil to colour the wood and emphasise the grain pattern. None of it is even close...

    Polishing Microcrystalline Wax

For something so simple as waxing and polishing, this may sound like a daft question but I'll ask anyway! I use Chestnut microcrystalline wax as a topcoat on most of my turning projects, using a polishing brush after letting the wax dry for 10 to 15 minutes. The wax is usually applied over oil...

    supernova2 adaptors

Another option is to buy a direct threaded Sorby Companion chuck and use your existing jaws on that. The Companions are about £105. As stated earlier in the thread, a Patriot with an excert is pretty solid and does give a bit more clearance around the headstock than a direct threaded chuck. Duncan

    Nexus 3 Jaws

Has anybody seen or bought Charnwood Nexus 3 jaws to fit a Patriot chuck? See http://www.charnwood.net/shop/category/ ... chuck-jaws Probably not the same quality as genuine Sorby or Supernova, but much cheaper, and I'm afraid my mercenary instincts are wrestling with my preference to Buy...

    Competition Pen

I think it's great. The form and the materials both look good in my opinion, although I don't know how comfortable it would be to use with that sharp change in diameter when the cap is removed. I'd be well pleased if I'd made it! Duncan

    Gorilla hand cream

Hospitals use a generic aqueous cream which is very effective on dry or split skin and typically consists of distilled water, white petroleum jelly, mineral oil, emulsifying wax and a preservative of some sort. Google "aqueous cream" and you'll find that it's cheaply available from lots of...

    looking for Clifton frog's pics

Attached picture shows the frog on a virtually unused Clifton No.4, about 3 years old. Light machine marks, but overall impression is nicely finished loaded surfaces. The apparent rough spot about halfway along near the lateral adjusted is actually grease. My two pre-WW2 Stanleys and a more...

    Workshop Air Cleaners

Thanks for your comments gents, I don't think I'll be getting a HEPA filter any time soon but would certainly consider the various options before shelling out for an air cleaner again. Mouppe: That Blueair looks interesting, but it is very expensive in the UK and also quite large for the quoted...
