    Tax evaders

I read something about this very recently and the Queen gets 25% and the rest goes to the public purse.

    Is this joint strong enough?

OK, thanks. The frame will be made from pine with ply for the shelves so it's the pine short rails end grain that will be used. I will have a go with the perpendicular dowel option for the frame joints but the legs will be attached with screws. I don't know if I will ever have to dismantle it...

    Is this joint strong enough?

Hi all, I need an assembly table so I have put together a design in sketch up. It consists of two and a half frames (90mm x 30mm) which will have butt joints with screws. I don't have a pocket hole jig so I will have to screw through the long rails into the end grain of the short rails. Is...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Simo, Wow, that is a beautiful guitar. Thr grain pattern looks like it grew specifically to be made into this.

Post a photo of the last thing you turned (!)

I only waited 2 or 3 days so that could be the reason.

Plum wood. This wood is already beautiful. Nothing I have done with it has added to that. Rough turned green, dried in it's own shavings for a couple of weeks, and then finished. I put some friction polish on it but it's a bit old and I didn't get as much of a shine as I was hoping for. Tried...

    Processing rough sawn wood

The first project will be a coffee table with a 1m x 600mm width top. I will have to join 2, maybe 3, pieces to achieve 600mm as well laminating pieces for the legs. I've made a small side table with wedged M&Ts previously and this will be a similar challenge.

    Processing rough sawn wood

I've been gifted 7 live edge and dry Walnut boards with the approximate dimensions of 1500 x 50 x 350(average). They all have varying degrees of twist, up to 100mm on one corner of 2 boards, and some minor cupping, one with major cupping and a couple of them are fairly flat. I have a workshop...

    Upgraded before I got started....

Good move, I started the same way with a CL4 starter kit from Ebay. They are good lathes and having the variable speed control is definitely worth it. Mine did start to sound a bit noisy and needed the bearings changing which wasn't too difficult.

    Turning tool suggestions/recommendations

I would agree with the set in Dalboy's link being a good selection that will serve you well for the majority of projects. That is pretty much what I use most of the time but I would add a larger scraper as another option.

machining tree trunk into thin boards

Indeed, although I only had a couple of logs that were big enough to split down the middle and I was cutting some of them for bowl blanks too.

machining tree trunk into thin boards

I've recently done this with a load of Walnut and a some Plum and after some time I figured the best way was to make a flat side on the log using an electric plane and a straight edge and then run it through the bandsaw with the fence, flat side down. I started with a new blade (3/4", 3 tpi)...

£1000 Bandsaws (Again!) Axi vs SIP vs Sabre 350

It states in the description that it has a cam lock. I have a similar bandsaw with the same fence set up and the fence rail has never been a problem for me and the fence is solid.

Solid workbench worktop - wet wood

As a beginner myself - would put me right off.

    Anyone heard of this guy.?

His website seems legitimate to me as is the payment method but, as he is offering to arrange collection, you will have to box and wrap it and wait in all day for the courier. If that's not a problem then go for it.

Advice on my proposed mini workshop layout?

You could try incorporating the table saw into your main worktop which would give you a combined table saw/outfeed table/worktop.

I use them regularly and I would highly recommend them for cost, ease of use and communication.

    Money abroad - who's a seasoned traveller?

It's generally always better to change money at your destination but take a small amount to tide you over until you find a change place. Using plastic has become more common in the last few years and there are some cards that specialise in this type of use. Until I moved abroad permanently, I...

    Sandalwood

OK, I cleaned up a couple of sides of one blank. This is 70x70x610mm and weighs 3270g. One side has some knots and swirly grain but planed fairly well and the adjacent side has straight grain and planed quite badly with lots of tear out although that could be down to my limited planing experience.

    Sandalwood

Not so long ago I bought a job lot of turning blanks from someone who was having a clearout. Most of it was easy enough to identify but I have several mystery pieces that smell like Sandalwood. The pieces are very heavy but I haven't cleaned up any surfaces to get a better look at the grain as...
