    In praise of great companies.

Contacted Axminster on Saturday (a couple of weeks back) regarding a problem with my 2+ year-old air filter - the remote was misbehaving - had a reply first thing Monday morning, saying that replacement parts had been dispatched. They arrived on Tuesday, I fitted them on Wednesday, problem...

fitting blum concealed hinges in 16mm mdf

Rather than a bearing-guided router bit, use a standard plunge bit and a guide bush. If you use a 20mm diameter bit in a 30mm bush, your template will just need a 45mm diameter hole, and you should be able to rout out each hole in just 2 or 3 passes.

    Noise control

Mass is the only thing that really works. So, ideally, perhaps concrete blockwork. Otherwise, a double skin of 18mm or thicker ply, with rockwool batts between, and, as others have said, either a convoluted or baffled exhaust port.

    Temperature Monitoring

Alternatively, the digital 1-wire temp sensors (18B20) are easy to use with Raspberry Pi, which could also easily host a webpage displaying the temperatures.

    Polyurethane varnish recommendation

Depends on (a) how the ply is going to be used - “decent” furniture, or workshop fittings, (b) what sort of finish - gloss, matt, satin - you want. For general purpose, functional items, I’ve found Ronseal quick drying varnishes work pretty well. I guess that the cheaper brands (“No Nonsense”...

Designing and making an Emperor size Sleigh Bed

I used some of these: https://www.bedslats.co.uk/premium-heavy-duty-bed-connecting-system to replace the (failed) horrid slot-together things on our bed. I used 2 per corner - the side rails on the bed are ~150 x 25 veneered ply. Easy enough to fit, and they’re still solid and quiet after...

    Oak table finishing advice

Polyvine wax finish varnish. 2 coats of satin, brushed and denibbed between coats with a grey scouring pad, them a final coat of dead matt. Looks (and feels) a lot like wax, but much harder wearing

    MFT - wossit all about?

I’ve encountered numerous people who, offered a stick, will deliberately grab the wrong end and steadfastly refuse to give it up, no matter what anyone says.

    Pocket Hole Jigs?

The Trend Pro jig is adjustable for material thickness, if I remember correctly, from 13-38mm. Comes with a simple setting gauge for adjusting the drill depth, and a pair of extension arms that help support wide workpieces.

    Pocket Hole Jigs?

I’ve got the Trend jig, moved over to pocket screws for utilitarian boxes, cabinets etc. after a long while using dowels. The pocket screws are much faster than dowels, and, provided you design the joints appropriately, ie using the screws to locate the joint and hold it together rather than as...

Very basic electrical problem - please help

Use a 12V coil relay located with the pump. Use the float switch to switch just the relay coil current, and switch the motor current with the relay contacts. Loads of automotive 12v relays on the Bay.

    Camera buying advice please

Standard answer to the question “What’s the best camera?” is “The one you have with you.” And it’s true. I’ve been taking photographs for donkey’s years, on film cameras, SLRs, various digital compacts, DSLRs, and mobile phones. I’ve taken lots of rubbish pictures on expensive DSLRs with even...
