Converting a metal lathe for ornamental wood turning

Hi all, Has anyone done this? I have a Myford M type and was thinking to use the top slide to fix to the bed of my Union Graduate. Then I wondered about removing the M type headstock and re-fixing it on a hinged plate to make a rocking headstock. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with...

    Another boiler issue.

Hi all. Question for any plumbers out there. I have a Grand condensing oil boiler (not combi) fed from attic tanks. The previous Thermecon boiler seemed to work fine, it had 28mm fittings. The Grant replacement has 22mm fittings going into 28mm. My problem is the boiler is short cycling. Once it...

Plaster (boarding) over an asbestos ceiling? How best to do it?

Early Artex contained asbestos, later versions did not. I remember an Artex guy complaining you couldn't get the old stuff any more. K

Sowing the First Seeds of 2023

I bought a load of Charlotte seed potatoes for myself, relatives adnd friends to share, but ended up planting most myself in every available bed. Had a really good crop which we are only now finishing - good storage for second earlies. And considring they are a salad variety, had some really...

    Parkside lathe....

I agree with the previous comments - steer clear of this. Machine Mart are offering a Clarke for £200 (also badged as lumberjack, vevor, SIP etc etc) and I would seriously recommend you to steer clear of that too. I have not owned one but a careful in store inspection was enough for me to walk...

    Oscillating dander on offer again

Rutlands are offering their generic oscillating sander again, £120. This offer is for today only. I bought one last time and they seem OK, although it has not had much use. Just giving a thumbs up. K

    Hi from Wales

There is a Union Graduate I know of now at around £500 with about 8 faceplates included. Located in West Wales. These faceplates fetch around £30 each. I think it is a 3 pase motor though. Might be a good starting point. I would buy it but I really don't need another lathe. K

    I need help

Thanks guys. I think I will sell the Myford (my first proper lathe after trying out a Black and Decker drill arrachment - yuk - I have owned it for over 40 years so quite attached to it). I no longer use it and the other bits of kit have more capacity anyway. They are nice little lathes though...

    Table lamp electrical advice please

I seem to remember in the 1966 (ish) IEEE wiring regulations it became necessary to use twin and earth cable to all light fittings, wheras previously an eart connection was not needed. The reason is householders might fit lampshades with exposed metal, which then needs earthing. Things have...

    I need help

Hi folks, I am in serious need of help. I have a Union Grduate, a Denford Viceroy and a Myford ML8. I now have the opportunity to buy another graduate (haven't seen it yet) with about 8 faceplates, bowl rest and some turning tools at a very reasonable price. Also it is only about 20 miles away...

    Wanted ML8 1x12tpi Engineering Chuck

Hi James, I will get some photographs for you to make sure it is what you need. The backplate is Myford ML8, I am not sure of the make of the chuck itself. I will be in touch. It is 5" so it is HEAVY and postage will not be trivial. WHere re you? I am near Lampeter / Llandovery in Wales. As a...

A labour of love - restoring old woodblock parquet

Brilliant job there, and very well documented. Overall, what do people think is the best way to remove the bitumen? Saw it off (table saw?),, chip off after freezing? Any other ideas? And what do people do about decades of polish on the surface? I turns into chewing gum when heated. K
