Just bought a DeWalt scroll saw

It's not the saw that is the issue, it is time to use the thing - and I'm retired !!! Hopefully soon

Using a metalworking chuck on a wood lathe

Brief summary perhaps, but very interesting all the same. I have never seen soft jaws, just heard the term mentioned occasionally. Thanks for the explanation. Keith

    Axminster Planer Thicknesser ?

I bought one of these about 8 years ago, and they were described as being trade rated then. I don't know if the spec has changed but the similar replacements were hobby rated - there is a big difference according to the Axminster info between hobby and trade. Anyway I have to agree that the...

Using a metalworking chuck on a wood lathe

Thanks JG. So am I correct in assuming that soft jaws are basically the same as normal jaws but not hardened - I know that sounds a bit obvious but what I was wondering is, if you were to heat up normal jaws to, say, red heat ( I'm not going to - just wondering) would that soften the jaws and...

Using a metalworking chuck on a wood lathe

Good point - yet another use for metalworking chucks. I acquired one of mine when I bought a viceroy wood lathe and it has been really handy. Just a quick question - how do you know what soft jaws to get? I have several metal chucks and the jaws are not interchangeable in either my two 5"...

Using a metalworking chuck on a wood lathe

I know what you mean Paul, and if it works for you then that's fine - I sometimes use a metalworking chuck myself when other work holding methods aren't available, but I have found the metal jaws tend to crush wood fibres. What's worse is the crushing is not symmetrical depending on where the...

Just bought a DeWalt scroll saw

Hi all, I bought a budget scroll saw a few years ago and have never really got on with it. Today I bought a DeWalt for £140, with about 15 packe of blades. I tried it out and the difference is amazing, especially the vibration. Anyway it all seems to work, but the dust blower is missing. I think...

Using a metalworking chuck on a wood lathe

Hi all, If you happen to have a metalworking chuck that fits your wood lathe you probably know that it is not a good device for holding wood. However you can use it for:- 1 Holding sockets ( from a mechanic's socket set ) and then you can push it a square of wood instead of using a drive...

    Tips & Tricks

I have a sheet of thin plywood on the floor at the back of my lathe. This helps to avoid damage to the end of my turning tools when they fall off the bed, which they always seem to do. I put them there temporarily rather than putting them back where they belong, but got fed up of having to...

    Myford ML8 thread

Hi all, The ML8 thread is 1" x 12 (inboard) which is the same as used on iron pipe fittings, apart from the thread form. I have screwed iron fittings onto mine anyway. So it could be a cheap source of fittings for home made faceplates etc. K

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

The spindle will need reducing, there's not a lot of meat there. I think I may have to start with a cylinder about 40mm diameter and turn to fit the chuck, but leave a step as a flange which I can drill and screw into the adapter. Sounds like a lot of turning. I wonder how long it will take. K

Might buy an old Viceroy - need help with the spindle size

I suppose this is irrelevant now, but I have only just seen the post. The viceroy is indeed 1 1/2" x 8 tpi, ( same as Boxford ) and both head and tailstocks have no. 3 Morse Taper. The bed on mine can be unbolted from the headstock column, and the leg at the tailstock end is also removeable...

Thanks Chas. Just out of interest, why would you find this to be a preferable course of action? K

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Hi again all, Well I managed to get the pulley off the viceroy spindle, and to remove the spindle. My next job I to mount the spindle in the 3 jaw chuck of my Colchester, screw on an adaptor which is slightly off centre, and turn it up accurately. The adaptor is needed because I bought a...
