    Union Graduate Wood Lathe

Faceplates, around £30 -£40 each Chuck, £50 or so, depending on type ( looks like a metalworking chuck but still very useful for holding home made screw chuck, pin chuck, drill bits etc). If it's a wood chuck plus jaws then probably worth £150 or more Revolving centre, drill chuck, bowl rest -...

What do you use compressed air blower in your workshop for?

I was in the same situation as the OP, wondering what to buy. Do I get a small one just for tyres etc, or a bigger one for air tools etc. I chose a 3HP 100 litre one and have not regretted it once. It is quiet, having separate motor and compressor units. But, what to use it for? Tyres, of...

    Rookie first lathe

Firstly, do not buy - as in DO NOT BUY - one of those cheap tinplate lathes with twin square bars for a bed. Badged as Clarke, Sip, Draper, Lumberjack, Aldi and probably others, they are not fit for purpose. Go online and look for a lumberjack lathe at around £140 and you will see the type I...

anyone got a scheppach ts2500 table saw?

Izzyix and skood1 If you send me email addresses I can send you a scan of the manual I have. It is for the alloy table version but will probably be very similar. It might take a day or two to do the scanning. I just noticed the dates of the posts. Sorry for the delay guys - I don't check out...

    tapping a thread in aluminium

I was thinking of cutting the register portion first, then the tapping hole, all without removing the blank from the chuck ( Colchester master). I ought to be able to cut the thread using the lathe itself but am getting problems with this at the moment - too much slack. I am not too worried...

Review/modification of Axminster's New cyclone top.

Another question - does the Axminster cyclone need a more powerful extractor? I have 1 hp chip collectors. Would they be man enough to work? K

Tightening the saddle on Colchester Mk 2

Sorry, my mistake, it's a Colchester master mk 2 square head. When cutting anything more than very light cuts I can feel the whole saddle move. Also when screwcutting I always get multi start threads however I try, and I think it is because there is enough movement to cause mis- alignment of...

Tightening the saddle on Colchester Mk 2

Hi all, I have a Colchester Mk2 square head with gap bed, nice lathe, but the saddle has slop. Can anyone tell me where the gib stripe tightening screws are, and any hints on solving the issue? Many thanks K

    Insulating Walls (Block Shed)

Things might have changed in the last 40 years (!!!) but on my first house I put a silicon water repellent on the non- cavity rendered walls, followed by a few coats of Dulux Weathershield, and it was still looking good when I sold it about 5 years later. Certainly stopped moisture ingress. K

Review/modification of Axminster's New cyclone top.

Interesting post, thanks for taking the time to upload all those images. Do you think the Axminster version is a great improvement over the plastic ones on ebay for about £13? There is certainly a great step up in cost. K

    Scratter Vs wood chipper

It certainly is possible to make your own scratter, I made one when I was a teenager, and the only power tool I had was my dad's electric drill. The design came from a book published by Amateur Winemaker, called Woodwork fot Winemakers by Dart and Smith. Basically it is a square wooden box, no...

    Boosting weak mobile telephone signal

Hi all, I live in a rural area with very weak mobile signal, so I don't make much use of the technology. However it now seems that banks are adding mobile texts as an extra level of security, and so I am going to have to get this sorted. Our bank did say we could still use our local high street...

    americans and blade guards

I can see the American point of view in that the guard is sometimes in the way, but how much time does it take to remove and refit one? Not long on my Scheppach. So I remove it for grooving etc, but then it goes straight back on. I feel much happier with it on. K

    Cheap turning tools at Yandles

Ah, someone agrees with me about these being not fit for purpose. Thank you Mark. Excellent for beginners though - should put them off turning for life even if they don't get injured using them. When I started turning many years ago I don't think HSS was available for wood turning tools, or at...

    Cheap turning tools at Yandles

Hi all, I have a few minutes to send a more detailed reply now. As I said, I have never been to Yandles, so as far as I know it is just a website selling tools. When I saw those chisels I thought - rubbish !!! Which is what I would expect for that price. They look identical to sets I have seen...
