Aluminium riving knife - bad idea?

You need to do what I did. Take the riving knife out and merrily cut down lengths of timber, walnut in my case but I don't think that makes a big difference. Then as a length of timber kicks back, hits the end of your finger opening it up like the petals of a bleeding red tulip and ripping...

Question about being a qualified joiner.

I always wanted to be a carpenter when I left school, but had to stay on to do A-levels as they were then. When I eventually left I drifted into IT and made a decent career from it. But, I never gave up on woodwork and oh boy did it pay dividends, not just in the money that it saved me for our...

    Dust extraction advice for bandsaws

Yes, I have something similar but it's the Record Power RSDE2 on a Record Power BS350 bandsaw. It works just fine. I've not really noticed it as noisy, but then I've not compared it to anything else.

    bandsaw 1, thumb 0

Yes you're right. It's dangerous to work with sharp tools when you're tired. Mind you, I have problems when I'm wide awake! The last one I like to call my "tulip finger".

    A Very Special Tree

The last time I had a tree taken down I got a discount from the tree fellers for NOT having to take it away. At the time they could only sell on 1 cubic metre of any tree they felled, the rest they had to pay for to be dumped.

    two part epoxy

I used to build model radio control planes years ago and a pal gave me 2 tickets to a model plane show. On arrival it immediately became clear that the "model planes" were in fact self build proper person carrying jobs! I think I had lockjaw at the end of the show  Astonishing stuff...

interested in your experiences paying for tradespeople

It's not bad is it. Mind you, at that rate he'd have been VAT registered, a 40% tax payer and if employed by his own limited company he might have actually taken home £267 of that. Then there is the matter of professional fees for his accountant, his certification fees and the cost of his van...

interested in your experiences paying for tradespeople

Well, I suggested that he rewire it. Apparently that was a problem because of the positioning of the RSJ that had been installed where the wall had been taken down. When I asked him where he thought the RSJ should have been placed, he got a bit lost. OK, I then suggested that he replace the 50w...
