    Advice - wormy applewood

Thanks for the advice folks, didn't think about heat or cold or the pierced look... Will be trying at least one of these on the weekend when I get to play :)

    Advice - wormy applewood

I have been given some apple logs for Xmas, some good girth (15-16") and figuring but clear evidence (holes and tunnels) of worm/beetle damage to the outside inch or so, the trees were blown over around a month or two ago but have clearly been unwell for a while - what to do? Should I: A: Wet...

    mt2 too long

I used a number of MT1 - MT2 adaptor sleeves when I upgraded and these were all too long for the bore on my Maxi, I ground the ends off on the coarse wheel of the grinder, less exercise but more time for turning!

    Lenakana & Rhyton 2

A really interesting and nice piece - how did you achieve the vultures neck? was it carved away from a larger disc or joined afterwards, neat piece of carving either way

    Clean bill of health

Hi Woody, glad to hear you're doing well - I feel kind of guilty for buying your Maxi now but rest assured its well used, its taken my turning to another level and I try my first craft fair tomorrow - all the best mate and good luck in your return to play. Bob

    Woodcut BowlSaver - Limitation?

Martin, Thank you very much for your reply, I saw the laser guide when buying but obviously this represents more outlay. I'll consider it and try the methods suggested in future, this will tempt me to set a few of the blanks aside for now. The next batch of stock will be to the optimum...

    Woodcut BowlSaver - Limitation?

Hi Paul, Yes I have tried speeding the cut up and slowing it down, the entry cut works well enough - it is further around the cut the the problems arise, I don't think its up to it so I have continued saving smaller bowls for now. Thanks again

    Woodcut BowlSaver - Limitation?

Thanks for the replies, yep I've seen the video on YouTube and the CD that Woodcut provide. I think I'm just going to have to save a smaller bowl and carry on removing the rest of the waste with the gouge. Paul, I can get the body of the bowlsaver up to the blank initially, it is in...

    Woodcut BowlSaver - Limitation?

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has experience of using the woodcut bowlsaver? I have recently bought it and set it up carefully, it works well however one limitation is troubling me, I don't seem to be able to save larger diameter bowls 250-300mm from relatively thin blanks of around 80mm...

Advice - 3 or 4 Jaw Engineering Chuck for wood lathe?

Just checked the Versachuck and this is cheaper - Chuck £60, Back Plate £25, Jaws £40 = £125, compared to around £165 for the Axminster Clubman with Engineering Jaws Might do this if I can't find a better/cheaper option, Thanks Bob

Advice - 3 or 4 Jaw Engineering Chuck for wood lathe?

Hi Chas thanks for the reply, I've just looked at the Axminster Jaws and, not owning an Axminster chuck, they seem an expensive option as I'd have to buy the chuck + jaw set - I am also unsure how much faffing is involved changing the jaw slides not having done this before. I'll have a look...

Advice - 3 or 4 Jaw Engineering Chuck for wood lathe?

Hi, wondering if anyone can help me. I don't know much about metal/engineering lathes but was hoping to find a traditional 3 or 4 jaw chuck to fit my Maxi 1 Spindle - 1 1/4" 8tpi. Don't seem to be able to locate such a thing on ebay, google etc. Could anyone give me any advice about how I...

    Split chucking recess

Thanks guys, yes I confuse myself with talk of in and outs. It was a recess, but it and the wall were proud of the bottom of the bowl, and on reflection I think it may have split as I turned the outside of the bowl (and the chucking point) one day and reversed it the next so the wood had moved...

    Split chucking recess

I've found some posts about the benefits of spigots over tenons but have been using tenons on larger bowls for now. Despite getting the hang of this gradually, I underestimated the strength and integrity of a piece of ash, a 12" x 4" bowl, and the chucking recess split midway through hollowing...
