A carpenter working on the 5th floor of a building needed a handsaw. He spots another worker on the ground floor and yells down to him, but he can't hear him. So the carpenter on the 5th floor tries sign language. He points to his eye meaning "I", points to his knee meaning "need", then moves...

Hi Julian, For a customer this week i had to cut to length the same worktop as yours, i used a cheap Aldi track saw with its cheap blade and it coped ok. Although in my case it fitted between 2 walls so the cuts where hidden but with a sander it would of cleaned up ok to be on show. What i'm...

    Does wood ever stop expanding?

This is why i hate making doors and windows. Having to return to customers who's windows and doors need to be planed off and repainted is a real pain as i can't charge for this, luckily i don't make many. Saying that i've got 8 to do in the next couple of weeks. Does not matter what timber is...

Rounded up all the stray pencils in my workshop earlier and had a mammoth sharpening session 32 in total. I have 4 tape measures in the workshop and its amazing how one minute i have one in each pocket and the next i'm scratching about trying to lay my hands on one. Once the other half commented...

    My worst accident so far

In 26 years as a furniture maker the only time i had to visit A&E was when a fat 3inch splinter went right thro a finger. The other half had just gone off on the school run so i had to wait 1/2 an hour, when they got home her and the kids thought it was a joke. After a lot of pulling it was...

    Interesting Tree Surgeon Video

Nope! As said just standard take down, although not in this country as HSE would be all over them. The saw you mentioned is a top handle saw, i use a Stihl, you would need a chainsaw licence to buy one. HSE don't like them as they are used with one hand and hard to control if kickback.

Milling my own Douglas Fir in pictures

First fell your trees. These Douglas Firs I was felling were 100 foot long. Here a friend is hauling out the logs. For some logs I used my own tractor. Logs ready for milling. Another friend in action with his woodmizer. I moved the logs from the stack to the mill using a Kramer...
