Excellent choice. You will forget the sting to the wallet in a few months, but really appreciate the capacity in future! You can make small stuff on a big machine but not big on a small...

Polishing Resin on a cricket bat

Excellent point - yes. If you are putting a finish on top, you don't need to polish nearly as high. I should probably have said this in my first answer! You may well be ok at the 240 if you have something to fill in the scratches. If you are doing multiple pours of clear resin and the lower...

    First lathe advice

I would definitely suggest getting a chuck. Unless you only want to do spindle stuff, faceplates alone are frustrating for bowls. They are expensive, so factor that into how good a deal a second hand lathe is. Also, have you considered how you are going to sharpen your tools? It can be...

Same family, but 1 model up. M1000, vs m900 if you are going by old axminster names. Mine was made in the mid 90s I think and got some pretty hard use. It is only a hobby, but I was enthusiastic in working out how large a wet blank it would spin and it never missed a beat. Only problems I had...

More that it is a very common model that turns up cheap a lot. Once you start looking, that exact shape turns up under a dozen different names.

I too would agree that cast iron and weight is useful. Vibrations really are frustrating, especially when trying to turn larger pieces. I have a Nova with an electronic speed control. It has never given me any trouble, but I know plenty of people on here are really suspicious of electronic...

Polishing Resin on a cricket bat

Resin needs to be polished a lot higher than 240 grit it you want it to shine. I would go up to at least 1000 before using a cutting compound, normally to 2000 grit.

Nano / graphene / ceramic finishes?

Nano over a hard wax is a classic for increasing durability. The car type product I have used is a bit tricky for large areas as you have to work super fast. It sounds as if the woodworking versions as better natured though. This technology is definitely going to be more widespread in the...

    Led light panels

Colour temperature is not the only variable when considering how things look. Colour rendering index (CRI) will have a big effect. LEDs are less bad than fluorescent bulbs were, but if you want to see things clearly, you need to consider 4 things. Intensity (obviously!), light temperature, CRI...

    Led light panels

They also come with hanging kits. I just used screwed support points into the SIP boards I had as the roof and then hung them on wires

    Led light panels

I agree that panels are amazing compared with strips. Worth checking the CRI as well. I got some recently that were 95+ and some that were the standard 80+. The difference is quite noticeable.

    Axminster AW305WL lathe

Fair enough. I am fundamentally childish so find making big stuff entertaining! If you are mostly keen on spindle stuff, the Axminster looks as good a compromise as anything. Very compact yet with a 12 inch swing. I find most lathes are pointlessly long - I have never come close to using the...

    Axminster AW305WL lathe

It depends on what you are wanting to make. The chuck might struggle to cope with the maximum sized bowl you could make on that lathe. At least you already have tools and sharpening sorted as that is an expensive bit that people frequently forget. As for the lathe, it again depends on what you...

    New Large Slab Levelling/Milling Table

That is music to my ears! Found it very frustrating that with the old set up there didn't seem any difference in finish or stress levels if I was taking 1 mm or nearly 10.

    New Large Slab Levelling/Milling Table

It isn't so much tear out that I am worried about - I have a 2 + 2 bit with inserts on the sides, so thicker cuts aren't a problem. It is the keeping the router perfectly flat that I find annoying with the wooden version. Do you find your setup stops any play and keeps the spindle completely...

    Random orbital sander vibration shortlist

I have that little Makita (somewhere) and don't really like it. It can only be used 1 handed and feels quite tall and unwieldy. I much preferred the cheap MacAlister one with a front handle I had previously (until it died). No idea if 1 or 2 handed has any effect on vibration, but I always find...

    New Large Slab Levelling/Milling Table

I really like the look of your setup. Very impressive! I too am considering upgrading from a wooden sled made out of scrap. What diameter are your linear bearings? When it comes to using it, do you still need to hold the the router steady to prevent dig ins? I see various videos on youtube...

First lathe: which spindle thread to choose?

Very nice choice of first lathe and surprisingly capable (especially if bolted down!). Depending on how long you intend to keep it, I would get a 1 x 8 tpi chuck rather than m33 x 3.5. If you only intend to have it for a few months, go ahead and get the m33 x 3.5 and use an adapter as it will...

How easy is it to fit a kitchen?

I am surprised given the enthusiasm for second hand tools on here that nobody else seems to think the second hand kitchen option is worth considering. Of course I don't know where they are based or the style they are after, but a very quick eBay search throws up...
