    Sharpening - I'm sorry!

I would say from limited experience that all the different methods work, whether that be oil, diamond, scary sharp or what have you. There are pros and cons to them all (scary sharp is cheap to start for example but is a continual expense - diamonds are fast and stay flat for a long time but...

    Finding your niche

This is more aimed at the hobby woodies I suppose but does anyone else find it hard to settle on a single type of working with wood? I started off around ten years ago not really knowing what I wanted to make. Drifted in an out over the years but have run the full course of wooden toys...

    Cheap Trend diamond stones

Water or oil works, it supposedly helps the stone last longer than using it dry.

Frank Howarth's mamoth workshop being created

I really enjoy his videos but emulating his workshop in the UK would take a lottery win for most of us!

    Sharpening - I'm sorry!

Amazing how quickly these threads go off track... If you have been using scary sharp then you have an idea of which grades work for your purposes. Google a abrasive comparison chart and compare diamond plates to the grits you have been using.

    Which Honing Guide?

I have the Veritas, it is very useful and repeatable but does take a couple of minutes to setup. As others have said you should be able to do the same with a stop block for your existing guide if you are happy with it otherwise. The one thing the Veritas does that others don't is microbevels...

    Cheap Trend diamond stones

What grade does anyone with one to hand think the two sides are? RM have taken mine hostage at the 'open 12:00-12:05 on the fifth Friday of the month' sorting office.

    Housing and Help to Buy

We looked at it in our new estate last year, it is/was available on any plot subject to the maximum prices of the scheme. One sticking point is the valuation of the property - if the surveyor undervalues in comparison to the builder then you are out of luck as the help scheme only covers a...

New wooden workshop - insulation, ventilation and finishing

Any reason it couldn't be put in place from the inside and brought out and around each stud? Kind of on the inside but pushed back into each opening

    Equipment for a specific project

I'm a big advocate of having a go but you need to understand the realities of the situation. a) It WILL take longer. Likely a lot longer. b) It WON'T be as good as a professional job - at least not the first few times you do it. c) It will PROBABLY cost as much of not more to do it...

    Polyurethane over paste wax?

I've been looking into staining softwood a bit (kids bed doesn't match the furniture and SWMBO has decreed it as needing sorted). Best thing I could find was gel stain as it seems many stains leave a blotchy finish on softwoods. The general finishes one can be used without a topcoat or coated...

How would you go about building a bedrobe

You don't need slats, plenty beds are solid tops as long as the boxes are sturdy enough. Be aware you might want a softer mattress though as you lose the spring of the slats.

Newbie buying machined timber - unreasonable expectations?

Really? A little practice and you would be surprised I think. Knock up a shooting board and cut a little wide of your line then plane it square and to length. A lot cheaper than a mitre saw and just as quick.

    Paul Sellers - Trademark?

I would say that we might invent new tools but without them the previous generations likely invented every 'trick' there is! All people do now is rediscover them and then package them nicely in a YouTube video
