    Boarding out a van

If you want to reduce noise from the panels themselves, you can fit flashing to the metal panels first. Stops them vibrating on the motorway. Very helpful if you don't have a bulkhead. It also depends on what you are using it for. You could for example carpet the van after panelling which...

Why is the UK Timber Yards Sooo messed up?

When comparing to the US, and even more so India, consider the costs beyond transport. For example, VAT, property prices, minimum wages, NI etc. A lot of things that other countries don't have to pay or pay a lot less for. I'm not defending our timber industry as good service doesn't cost...

    Buying wood for delivery

Delivery is always going to be expensive just because of the weight and volume of wood however there are plenty of places that should be reasonable (SL Hardwoods for example). Perhaps you need to look at hardwood suppliers outside your area? Others options might be hire a van for a few hours...

Why is the UK Timber Yards Sooo messed up?

I usually get hardwoods from some tree surgeons I know North of the border or from Lanarkshire Hardwoods when I am up that way. Don't often buy anywhere else but tend to use Arbor if I do.

Why is the UK Timber Yards Sooo messed up?

Plenty places sell those sizes, I've had quotes from Hudsons and Arbor for 4x4 softwood that was a lot less than you seem to be suggesting? And I'm not talking volume either.

Record 52 1/2 - Best way to flush mount

I haven't done it yet but I'm thinking of recessing the jaw deep enough to then also fit a chop flush with the edge of the bench. Don't fancy trying to mortise it

question - why the lack of engineering vices in woodworking?

I have one but bolted to a separate bench, don't find it all that useful for anything woody though.

    Elm slab table, live edge

Looking really good. Did you feel it needed sanding after planing?

    Just Starting out. Table saw?

Consider the Veritas saws. Not traditional but very good and a fair bit cheaper than some other brands. The carcass saws are good all round joinery saws.

    Just Starting out. Table saw?

I would think long and hard about what you want to make and also whether you are doing this for yourself as a hobby, or with the aim of doing it as a profession. Your posts says basic furniture pieces but is this chairs or built in wardrobes? Plywood, pine or exotics? It all plays into your...

    Buying kits in bulk

I've used timberbits before and was impressed with their kits. Unless you mean real bulk importing I don't think you will find better for less (and by real bulk I mean buying them by the thousands from China or the like)

Why is the UK Timber Yards Sooo messed up?

Is this not much the same complaint you posted about in July? Reality is low volume users in any market get a poor deal, and even more so as distance from the source increases and overheads go up due to national factors (tax, minimum wages etc.).

    Wood vice

That's what I was saying above, I don't think a vice like that exists that mounts to the surface. They either mount underneath or are more integral to the bench (leg vice, tail vice etc.). Is there a reason you can't drill the metal panel and bolt through it?

Thicknesser. Is it the one machine you couldn't be without?

I'm in a similar position to you at the moment, trying to do it all by hand but with the difference that I've had many of the machines in the past. If you have space and budget, I would get a decent p/t and a bandsaw. Everything else can be done efficiently by hand. If space is more limited...

    Wood vice

I think you might be out of luck as I've never seen one. Do you want to hold the wood flat to work on the face or on edge? Different options for each that you could use instead (dogs, veritas inset vice, holddowns)

Record 52 1/2 - Best way to flush mount

As the title says - what is the best way to flush mount one of these vises? I've got a bench top already laminated up. To mount the vise flush I see two options - cut a recess then add an edging strip, or mortise the top to accept the rear vise jaw? I'm not keen on adding edging as I want...

    Knew Concept Jewellers saws

I bought one recently (from this forum no less) and it's excellent at what it does, far better than cheaper ones I've tried over the years. Mine is the screw tension, no swivel, but only because that's what came up for sale. If I was buying new I would want the lever but probably not the swivel.

    HandTool decisions decisions..

The Veritas Rip vs Crosscut saw is down to the way the teeth are set and sharpened. Otherwise I believe they are the same saw (but you wouldn't want to continually reset and file the teeth hence why you want two). As for sharpening, that's a can of worms but there is a diamond stone on eBay...

    Finding your niche

You've described what I was thinking better than I did Custard!! I've played with lots of tools, lots of methods but never mastered any of them (as the next great new thing comes along). On Perhaps it's time to rationalise the project list and do the same to my tooling, then embark on a set...
