Are we being ripped off by tool retailers?

Maybe it will just take me some time to get habituated to the prices charged for some of the kit. Their UJK equivalent is 1/3 of the price, yet also marketed as precision? I have some of the UJK and I do rate it.

Are we being ripped off by tool retailers?

Thanks for this response, I hadn't thought to look at CH for detail. 40% and 20% respectively do seem like low GMs, especially given Axminster's infrastructure. Trying to stay afloat and overcharging are not mutually exclusive, I am not claiming that their intent is to 'rip off', but...

Are we being ripped off by tool retailers?

I don't mind spending good money on quality tools, but a few items of late have made me ask the question - "Because we will pay for high quality items, does this lead to retailers marking up basic items well beyond what they should reasonably be? The last item was a leigh 710 router bush...

Withdrawn Leigh 710 Router Bush Adaptor

Looking to purchase a 'not being used' Leigh 710 Router Bush Adaptor or equivalent. Would rather put money in someones pocket on here than pay Axminster their inflated price of £24 for what amounts to a large washer....

Hennebury thanks for your response, but I am mentally wrestling with: "My advice; Don't take any advice" :). I think my standard position however is listen, question and decide, rather than blindly accepting. Last year, I joined an introductory college evening woodwork course. I made the below...

Yorkie guy - 6 weeks absence in a career speaks volume about your character well done. Average sick leave in NHS over a 35 year career is 63 weeks! Over double the private sector, which also speaks volumes. The social net has been spread too widely, with many working the system who should not...

Another good question, I don't want to spoil the hobby by allowing commercial considerations to dictate what I do. At the same time, I aim to make my hobby cost neutral in terms of offsetting equipment costs through things I sell, over time. This allows me to subjectively rationalise spending on...

I think my approach to woodworking has a lot to do with my personality. Always want to achieve more, don't want to accept imperfection, seeking high standards. All of which are double edged. I recall a conversation with some very capable furniture restorers, they never worked on pieces they...

I shall follow your suggestion and have such a session, I like it. As for free climbing, not for me ever! Happy to rappel but no rope - no way! Is that you, or is that a metaphor or both? Also brings back the words of Eckhart Tolle!

Jacob I particularly agree re the lifelong skills learning, and it is evident to me that some things I struggled with just 6 months ago, I can now complete to a satisfactory level. I have found this similar with other topics when advancing, read a book as novice and you will get some of the...

Thanks Sam, appreciated. I attended an evening course at a local college last year, c20 weeks. Whilst I made progress, I was disappointed. 15 minutes H&S in session one, then Tulip wood, photocopied page of a book - make a M&T, a DT, a Bridle joint etc. Did them ok but not to a high level, then...

Deema, you pose a very good question, “what exactly do I want support with?”. This has made me think. I will answer it the best I can, with the caveat that I don’t know what I don’t know, and as such, someone who does, should be able to see the gaps. Things I would like to improve (in no...

    No Fault Evictions

The hypocrisy gets me - Starmer - privately educated on a bursary, yet wants others to pay VA, Rayner - benefitted from right to buy, yet wants to stop others, Starmer and Rayner slating Conservative for the possibility of limiting winter fuel allowances, yet do the exact same thing. Ed...

    No Fault Evictions

Was Covid a man made attempt to reduce population size? Why have we not heard anything regarding the search into the source? Why has there been no governmental updates stating the current prevalence and risk exposure to the population?

    No Fault Evictions

The question remains, do you agree that at some point, population will outweigh natures ability to sustain it and as such, this topic will need address?

Hi Steliz, this forum and the responses I have had so far have been awesome. There seems to be a general willingness amongst woodworkers to assist one another, which is great. There is also as you point out, a great deal of humility. Do you have any particular 'go to' channels on YouTube? And...
