    Lathe thread form?

You might not get clarity from Axminster, but chuck makers will have information. This nova adaptor says UNC but maybe seek out a few more to check. I searched for 1 inch x 8 chuck thread form and this appeared...

    Home library

The full height IKEA ones do have the middle shelf fixed for structural integrity - it matches the top of the half height ones. My thoughts, first rule of books is you never have enough space, the collection expands, and your needs change over time so I would make your display shelf a...

Need advice on a small footprint woodworking bench build

Here's a thought. That lathe with its cast iron bench feet is a pretty heavy lump. On that model the headstock slides as well as swivels. If you take the tailstock and banjo off (assuming you have removed the stop screw like most people do - I regularly get the tailstock off and out of the...

Wood-bodied car- what wood would you use?

Yes, I remember the Marcos variations, the 1800 coupe went very quickly considering the occupants were sitting on a sheet of plywood. Almost bought one but chickened out when I saw how many extra holes had been drilled for the seat runners as the previous owner had tried to get it 'just right'...

    Whisky tumblers -advice please

I think you might lose a lot of the pleasure of whisky drinking, as mentioned above plus the clink of the ice. If pressed, I might buy some inexpensive, as in as cheap as possible, shot glasses and make decorative wooden sleeves. Need to think that through but maybe sleeves 2/3 height so it's...

Covering lines and gaps on bookshelf

Fill the shelves with interesting books and things and baubles to suit. Draws the eye. You won't even notice in week or two. (I find that when you decorate a room you notice every imperfection, put the furniture back and you stop noticing. Nobody else ever notices either.)

    Best Source for Blanks?

Do you live very close or do you have very long arms? Good idea though, but I suspect many councils outsource all tree work so you would be dealing with profit making local government service providers who, along with the phrase "reaching out" in any context apart from the physical act of...

    Rats in a trap...

Very very soon perhaps. Depends where you are in the country but first light is about 6am now, you get a 1 hour bonus when the clocks change but around the equinox it's the highest rate of change in day length. So, pigeons at 6, not long before pigeons at 4.30. Such joy.

    Rats in a trap...

Rats have few, if any, natural predators in the UK so the only limitation to numbers is food and shelter. I have nothing against rats per se, but when their numbers grow and their food supply diminishes and they need to find new nests they seek other sources and get closer and closer to humans...

Quick release (1/4 turn) fasteners for ply panel?

Have a search for meter box latches, might be what you want.

    Platter error

In theory, no. But who knows. If you let it all harden for a while, days or weeks, might work. Chestnut products have a useful compatability chart https://chestnutproducts.co.uk/product/a2-compatibility-chart/ Even if you are using non chestnut products it should be a useful guide. Or let...

    Bandsaw Blade Guide theory!

Unless you are preparing blanks to look nice for sale there is no need to make them round. Just cut a load of tangents so you have a hexagon, octagon or almost anything. No need to change to a narrow blade, faster, easier, no 'set' on the teeth. Anyway, after 2 years with my small hobby...

    Bending a silver steel rod?

Don't worry about snapping it - unless you bend it, bend it back, bend it back again etc. I would just put it in a vice, possibly squeezed in with a 'post' of some kind, and whack it with a hammer to get it started in the right place. Depending on material and what you want to do with the rest...

Wanted Any Woodturning magazines for sale?

The AWGB has an online archive of its quarterly magazines, a lot of it is club news type stuff but there are a few interesting projects to read about particularly in the later editions and lots of pictures of excellent work to inspire. You don't have to be a member to access it - awgb.co.uk...

    What lathe for small jobs?

The Axminster, and the record power 250, are small versions of proper lathes and you can do a great deal on them. The Clarke has some shortcuts, things like the tailstock handle, and although I've never owned one when I have seen them in store I've not been impressed. If you take up turning...

    Need to escape/reset

It's based on 20+ statutory for full time workers in the UK so now it's expressed as 28 all in because so many work the statutory hols and so many employers bent the rules. ACAS website for details. If you read back, Stig knows he has the entitlement - in his case 30 days because his contract...

    Need to escape/reset

I was going to reply soon after your first post, but wondered how helpful it might be. I think most of the ground has been covered with some very sound comments. No one of us can know enough of the full story so we mustn’t start with “If I were you….” because we are not you. So what follows...

    water proofing

Agree, tried it with low expectations. OK for a week or two then the vase split. I keep odd potential liners, shampoo bottles and suchlike, in a variety of sizes, no need to buy anything. Plastic has the advantage that you can cut it to height. It does constrain the design a bit, but if you...
