    Boards for wardrobes and cabinets.

Otters, early in the year I finished the making and fitting of the built in furniture at our new build bungalow. I used acrylic eggshell finished tulip/poplar for the frameworks, oiled oak for bookcase shelving and worksurface top, unfinished beech for slatted shelving in the wardrobes, MR MDF...

    Idiot builders

Look on the bright side of it not being more extensive. The final job of our builder on the bungalow we have subsequently sold was to insulate and render the outside. He used the wrong insulation, wrong render and wrong application procedure over the 110m2. It cost me nearly £12K to get it...

    Boards for wardrobes and cabinets.

Is the facing on the Egger Boards a melamine. If so then how much like "real" wood does it look, or does it give the effect of a totally flat and synthetic factory produced plastic surface. If this is the case then aren't you going to end up with a diy shed appearance fitted wardrobe, instead...

    Hardened wood glue removal

What glue have you used, I'm guessing a pva type so not brittle and prone to chipping a plane edge. I'd avoid a chisel, even with the bevel down as it might well remove a lump of the wood with the glue. I'd be tempted to use a block plane and then sand. You may be left with some staining to the...

    Wood stove idea

Jacob, I doubt building regulations would allow what you are proposing, and you now have to get everything signed off. Document J is what you need to read and best of luck with that one. It was a minefield when I had to interpret it for installation at our last house. Colin

Router bit too large for insert plate

If the bit will be to large for the insert plate then it will be to large for the router. Do not use it, it's not worth the risk. Colin

    Restore Ercol dark finish

My first thoughts are that is not an original Ercol finish. I know they did do some dark finishes, but it is usual for the grain to still be dominant and in your photograph this is not the case. I think minimal intervention is the way forward so as others have said just do the top. Chemical...

    Vintage drawing set. . .

I have a very similar set. I inherited from my father who would have bought them very soon after WW2 when he started his studies for his Higher National Diploma's. Colin

    Safe workshop heater?

Electric will be expensive to run, but it is the safest option. You do not say what size your workshop is. which is important for a reason so far not mentioned. Anything with a fan on it will not be able to blow the heat very far. so you may be better running more than one heater around the...

    What is wrong with tradesmen?

I'd be tempted to say the client needs certain reassurances and without them the jobs off. You need a meeting of all parties. It wouldn't matter how good they are, if they cannot bother to communicate then they are not worth using. Why should you be subjected to the stress. Colin

    mini pallet truck

As above, the problem is the incline. Some years ago I borrowed the 2.5 ton pallet truck from work to move my newly acquired 400kg Sedgwick planer thicknesser. Luckily we managed to lift it into my VW Touran, so that was one problem less. Next problem was 180 ft over gravel drive, a couple of...

    MRMDF

It should be flat, BUT, I've bought it in flat to make doors, stored it flat, rough dimensioned and re-stored it flat, cut and machined accurately to fit, painted alternate sides whilst flat on battens, fitted correctly and then watched the doors with correct number of hinges decide to kick out...

    Workshop floor? Keep it concrete?

I see a serious omission in the survey. An answer 5 of none. Colin

Can I do this on a drill press?

You could look at the Holzmann 460 or Scheppach 450 lathes that are available on mainland Europe. Colin

    Upside down doors

At first I was lost for words, then I tried to think of a fix. Unless you fancy an infill for the lock hole and plants on all door edges before re-shooting them in to fit, it's going to be new doors. An expensive mistake for your carpenter. Colin

    Shower Pumps

Another vote for Stuart Turner here. It was only make my plumber mate would fit in our bathroom a few houses ago back in the mid 90's. That pump is still going strong, a 3 bar twin impeller, but at about £1,000 new you can see why they are not a common fitment. Colin

    Aged brass round head screws?

Shame about the size. I've just had a look at the screw "collection" I inherited when my father passed away over 30 years ago. Amongst them I have a tin full of what looks like 1" x 10's. I think a few of them are used. Colin

    Which Coffee Machine?

How about a different solution, a hot plate and an Italian Moka Pot. Admittedly in the kitchen at home, I used to have a Cafetiere, then several plug in makers, but ended up with fool proof coffee every time with a Moka Pot. I've thought about one of the little pod type machines, but they are...

    18v tool brand choice

I do not think there is one correct answer to which make to buy, even if you were in the very unusual position of starting from scratch. I've friends in the trades and each swear by there preferred Bosch, Makita, DeWalt and Milwakee. I've ran 10.8 volt Makita for drill drivers/circular saw and...
