    Threaded pipe

3/4" iron pipe is a standard size for pipes in plumbing and heating systems. The term “3/4 inch” refers to the inner diameter of the pipe, which is approximately 0.824 inches or 20.93 millimeters This may also be of use:-...

    Construction adhesive?

Any of the no nails type product that is NOT water based would do the job, but you would somehow need to brace the timber in place whilst the glue goes off. Colin

Making internal doors - Tulip Wood Vs Sycamore

How stable is Sycamore to the joint lines opening up. The Tulipwood is VERY stable. I use an acrylic eggshell paint finish over everything I have made with it and cannot recall any joint line showing. With modern adhesives I've never resorted to through tenons, typically making the joint about...

    Softwood for table tops?

I have made several kitchen and kitchen/diner tables. A simple eggshell painted poplar frame and a top usually of oiled iroko always looks good and requires little maintenance. I've used pine boards for the tops on a couple that wanted a more "country kitchen" look and these have remained...

Garage ceiling insulation & garage door

I had a Hormann door at our last house. It is a wonderful thing, about 50mm thick with inner and outer surfaces of steel and heavily insulated between. The track system also has draught seals. It has good noise and sound insulation properties. Our present bungalow has two roller doors. They look...

Garage ceiling insulation & garage door

I do not believe you can drop all three rails as the door mechanism and tracks will not allow it. I think you are going to have to go with your original thoughts, boxing in over the top of the central rail. The door looks like a Hormann, and at the £2.5K price it is not something you want to...

    Wood floors and draughts?

Insulation would be no different, what I was trying to find was something clear as the gaps in a varnished floor would then not show up. Colin

    Broken NVR Switch

Unless you know what you are doing, then I'd chicken out and play with a 6 pin as it would be a straight swap. I found a 6 pin for £30. KEDU KJD22 4Pin 6Pin 250V 12(10)A Electromagnetic Waterproof Pushbutton Switches | eBay Colin

    Wood floors and draughts?

Ideally it would be floor up, insulate between the joists, a roll out breathable membrane on top of the joist and then re-lay the floor. But we know that is not going to happen. Next option would be to neatly cut hatches in the floor, get underneath and insulate between the joists, but again I'm...

    Oak flooring with dovetails

I have not seen it before, but I'm guessing the dovetail keys are end joining the board ends to give some support as there is no joist directly underneath. Colin

    Mains detector

I found my old Bosch was pretty good until I came across a similar problem to above. We have a new build with 100mm foiled insulation in the cavity. Needless to say it went nuts, but not as nuts as me. Volin

Best finish for Softwood - to minimise darkening?

I've found that any acrylic/water based varnish should do a decent job as they seem to keep the wood paler. If you go to an oil based finish I find the colour gets warmer and often yellows, ending up like a 70's sauna. Colin

    Threaded pipe

It sounds like you have the lighter duty clamp heads. 3/4" O/D pipe is in fact 1/2" gas barrel as the pipe is sold by the bore size. It comes in black or galvanised. Plumbers merchants may stock it but I sourced my [larger] pipe from a metal merchants, in lengths of 6.3m, I think. My plumber...

How do I know if a quote for work is reasonable?

Difficult to say, but as a comparison if you priced up a Woodwork job I would not be surprised to see a job wit £500 in materials coming out at £2,000 overall. Also, sand and cement is now a fortune compared to the days of old. Builders merchants typically charge £4.50 - £5.00 for sharp sand and...

Wood stove: Insulating above the closure plate, is it common? Good idea?

I'm trying to visualise what you are saying. I thought the chimney void around the flexible liner was filled with vermiculite that was poured in from the top when the liner was fitted. Colin

Bathroom wall not square. How to fix?

Joe, I've used the method you suggest several times for trueing up a corner. I've cut or planed tanalised roofing battens to profile/taper and then aqua panelled. This method is perfect for trueing up a wall, allowing pipe space or eliminating condensation on a solid, cold outside wall. The...

    hegner saw

Do an internet search on "Hegner scroll saw blade clamps" and you will find what you are after. They will have either a thumbscrew or a machine screw to tighten them. They also used to be available in one of two? different blade slot widths, dependant on your chosen blade. Colin

Child labour - when did you start you kids off in DIY

Our boys are 33 and 29. At 18 months old the eldest could identify and say dovetail joints that could be seen in drawers I was making. He liked to hammer and bang in nails, make simple wooden toys, as did his younger brother up until late junior school age. They then both totally lost interest...

Stenciling on wood - mistakes were made

We have a 13 month old grandson and I've been thinking about a measuring stick on one of the door frames. Buy a self adhesive tape and stick it to the plank or batten. You could try a dress-makers tape or even a standard 2m steel tape measure and liquid nails it into a shallow groove routed...
