    Tear out when drilling holes

If all else fails regarding higher drill speed and a nice sharp lip & spur/brad bit, then use a thicker piece of timber and re-plane the surfaces once holes have been drilled. Colin

Weldon tools router cutters -- opinions ?

Another happy user here. I thought that many years back they supplied some cutters to Trend or Titman, but I stand to be corrected. Colin

    Re-sharpen or buy new

As above. A good saw doctor will make your blunt saw like new. If teeth are chipped beyond a resharpen they will braise new in and grind to the same profile. I seem to recall we could get 8 to 10 sharpens out of a good blade such as your Freud. Colin

    Startrite 301E Motor details

I'd advise phoning around to see how much it would cost to have a motor rewind as this would probably be a worse case scenario. If the quotes are attractive then the bandsaw has to be worth considering. From memory the 301E was a later development of the Bandit. This only had a 1/2 hp motor and...

    Retirement options

You are so correct, you have to have a reason to get out of bed in the morning. You cannot revert to doing very little after being so busy. I've learnt the hard way. I taught secondary school for 35 years and was mentally and physically knackered. Up at 5:15am, cycle to work for 6:15am no lunch...

Startrite 275 table saw riving knife dimensions

I have found with the existing 1.5hp single phase motor I can happily rip 3" hardwoods with a a 12" 24T fine kerf blade. Occasionally the saw will trip, but is usually cool and runs again fine after a few minutes. It's given me 20+ years of service like this. Colin Just had another thought...

Startrite 275 table saw riving knife dimensions

Pooky, you might find the picture below of use. It is of the riving knife on my Startrite TA175 that was I believe the original fitted to the TA275 I used at work. The two saws share the same components. My saw runs blades up to 305mm. The large grids are 50mm so if you scale it you should have...

Startrite 275 table saw riving knife dimensions

Pattern covered as above. but what about the thickness? Aim for something just over plate thickness of the blade but no greater than the kerf or cut it makes. Colin

    What Finish Over Danish Oil?

I do not believe shellac will not take on top of danish oil, although I have put danish oil on top of a white french polished oak door that was finished 18 months prior. I would give the oiled surface a wipe down with white spirit and then wax it. Colin

    Recording of deaths UK

I suppose you have to start somewhere and whatever method you use somebody could prove was inaccurate. I note on the daily statistics that the deaths say had covid within the last 28 days, so the death is not technically a covid death, but could be linked to it. No matter what method you use...

    Cascamite

Why not Titebond 3. Good initial tack, decent open time, waterproof, don't need to mix it and waste it. I gave up using Cascamite years ago. Colin

    Floor colour

Confession time now. My previous garage and workshop were both painted with Leyland Oil based floor paint.I found paint chipping to be an issue as the workshop floor surface was not brilliant, so every few years I would scrape small areas back, seal with unibond, spot a and then give the whole...

    Floor colour

A couple of thoughts. Is the floor concrete and if so is it new as you would have to leave it several months before painting. Grey would be my preferred colour. Dark enough to hide dust but bright enough to reflect light. Big rubber mats could be a problem over concrete as the floor will sweat...

    First import from the EU

I'm guessing, but your individual little packet will not be sent separately directly to the UK. It will be bulked up with a container full of stuff to somewhere in Europe, possibly Switzerland. Here the bulk delivery will be opened up and the individual packages forwarded on. I will then now be...

    Electrifying a Shed/Workshop

If you wanted to be legally safe by avoiding the regs then why not use that spare 16amp CB in the Garage Consumer Unit to put a socket next to the consumer unit. From this run your 2.5mm T&E on a plug through the conduit into the workshop. I'd go with plastic. I'd have thought going this route...

    Hegner springs

Firstly I bought some new bellows for my 35+ year old Hegner form this company:- Ostia Tools | eBay Stores The spring at the back is around the tension bar. This has a v block top and bottom that sit into a couple of v cradles I found on the school machines we had that the edges of these cradles...

Advice on using an MFT to cut full sheets

For one man dimensioning larger pieces of sheet material I use a cheap approach :- - set up two sawing horses and lay 3 old lengths of lengths of 75 x 75 wooden fence posts on top. - lay sheet material on top of these and mark out - clamp straight edge, either off cut of sheet material or length...

    Fair price

The Wadkin is a solid machine but I also think that price is steep. I don't think the Multico has a tilt arbor. I had a simpler model and it appears to share the same pivoting fence design. Mine had a nice 3hp single phase motor. At £300 it has to be worth a look and if a matter of just a good...

    Your oldest piece of machinery

As the title says. How long can we expect our machinery to last. My contender is a Startrite pillar drill. It started life as a glaziers drill. It did not have a chuck but a diamond dust covered tube. It was gifted to me in a sorry state. Headstock and base were rusted solid onto the pillar...

    Cordless drill

I run 10.8v Makita for bench/cabinet work. Small and comfortable, easy to handle and they will do a screw up as tight as you can. One battery charge will cope with a small box of crews. For building/diy work I use an inherited 18v Blue Bosch with hammer. This is so good I cannot remember when I...
