Can't find the water valve in the street. Any ideas?

I'm a bit lost on that one as I do not know anybody worse off on a meter. I would not have an un-metered supply. We are a retired couple who on a weekly basis have seemed to inherit a lot of washing for our son, partner and baby, so looking more like a family useage. We live in Devon which has...

Can't find the water valve in the street. Any ideas?

I thought the standard set up was a 12 bar main down the road that branched out to your meter hole/stopcock with a restrictor down to 3.5 bar? on it. To me it looks like the square cap would be where a meter would be fitted or the stopcock . As neither is fitted I'd contact your water company...

    Glue on old bowling bowls

I'd expect it was a hide glue so would try a hair drier on them to loosen the adhesive. Colin

    When Will It Be Over?

I've found this winter drier than the last. We moved to Devon in Sept 2022 and you could not walk on the grass from Nov to March as it was a water logged bog. This year it has just been very wet and access possible. Like you our painted outside walls are greening up on the west side of the...

    First seeds of 2024

And that reminds me. I'm waiting to sow some repair patches with grass seed. I think with the two week forecast showing air temperatures of 10-14c during the day and 5-11c at night I'll risk it. Moving swiftly on to killing things instead of growing them. I don't think I can spray the meadow...

    Software for planning application

Can you still submit hand drawn plans? I know it is some years ago, but on one house I did this for a detached 8x5m timber workshop and attached extensions of rear lounge, utility room, rear garage extension, front garage extension and porch. These included scale elevations of present and...

    Acme nut help

Fergie 307, as regards wear, I believe there is a ratio between nut thickness and the thread diameter. If the nut thickness is kept within the ration then the nuts thread will wear before the leadscrew thread. I though this ratio was common across nuts and bolts for this reason. When the nut...

For Sale Old tablesaw with impossible thread £70

As regards the nut, you could try here:- Industrial Fixings | Southend - South Essex Fasteners Ltd I used to use them frequently when living in Essex and recall one day somebody at the counter asking for a very obscure thread size. The reply came back left or right handed sir. Colin

    Buying from EU

It's not just low cost items effected. A while back I looked at getting a £2,000 caravan awning imported from NL. Not a hope. The manufacturers I approached said it is not worth the hastle. Back in 2007 I bought a new caravan from Belgium, no problems, very easy. I thought about it again in 2021...

    Coffee Container lining question

I'd stay with what you have. Fresh coffee should ideally be kept in a cool and dark air-tight container, so I cannot see a wooden solution being the way forward. For the last ?? years I've kept my ground coffee in a metal screw-top container in the fridge and I'm happy with the taste. Colin

    Kitchen floooring recommendations

Have a look at Polyfloor. If you think about the bobby rubber flooring you see in the likes of airports you'll get the idea. We have had it in two houses and have been impressed with it. It deadens sound slightly [compared to the Amtico we have had in bathrooms] and is warm to walk on. It...

    Glazing

I used a lot of Butyl Putty/Glazing Compound when I re-glazed the metal windows on a previous house. It ranged in consistency from a wet dough like slop, which I dried out by rolling across newspaper to draw the liquid out, to stiff and near useless. This was usually due to it being out of date...

    Building control (or not)

Does the situation exist as a result of a problem with the planning department or building control department, as the two are not the same? As a developer I assumed you would have an architect draw plans and a structural engineer do soil samples and work out the specification on the construction...

    Stain Block advice

You could try 50/50 pva and water, then follow up with any cheap oil based undercoat. I've used this method to block water stains from leaks into a lathe and plaster ceiling. Colin

Advice and suggestions wanted for tricky space

First physical thing I would probably do is to tackle the irregularity of the windows. These are at your natural site line and your eye will go straight to them. If you ran an oversize and totally flat architrave around the window, with the bottom piece being of a different depth to balance out...

    Flattening a small door...

If you live with it then fine, if not I'd machine up a couple of short lengths of oak and play around with some stains. You could fix these to the reverse to pull some of the bow out and possibly give them a second function such as supports for storage rack or pigeon holes of some type. Colin

    Thicknesser advice

You could also consider a DwWalt planer thicknesser. Something like a used but still lots of life left in it DW50, or slightly later model, should be about £300-400. I owned one for several years and it really did perform well. The only part that you would need to check is the rubber coated...

    Workshop (Garage) Door Build

I made these a couple of houses ago in 1997 I think. The frame and doors spanning approximately 2.3m width and height were out of unsorted joinery softwood machined to a finish size of about 55mm. M&T joints to all cross rails, but not through or wedged. I had a centre rail behind the T&G panel...
