    Big gap under internal doors

I'd look at two solutions already mentioned. On a couple of doors fit an Oak strip set back from door face by 3 or 4mm both sides and apply finish same as the door. Let the client live with this for a few weeks. Id expect they would be perfectly happy with this. If not then plan B, drop the door...

How to prevent a garden deck sub-base from rotting

I've just come back to this post and realised the following observation may help, and come as a surprise to some. Decking timber is generally treated as UC3 and is NOT suitable for ground contact. It should only be used above ground, eg fence panels. UC4 is a more vigorous treatment and allows...

    Small 12v drill/drivers

About 10 years ago I swapped from a 12v Makita to a 10.8v Makita with Li-Ion batteries. At £50 each including charger and two batteries it was a good call. I bought two drill drivers and subsequently an impact driver I have never used, a small circular saw that is brilliant and an angle drive...

What have I done wrong? Carcass not square

If the corners were 90 degrees when you put it together then you are cutting things square and gluing up correctly. The one things that stands out to me is the front of your carcase is unsupported/not braced. It will rack [wobble around] and the top member of the carcase will drop in the centre...

How can I order wood which won't warp?

If you are going to paint the bookcase then use plywood. and glue/pin a trim on the front edge. This can be decorative, simple or wider than the ply as per your preference. This will be cost effective, should be stable and will be nice to paint. I generally make painted cabinet/bookcases etc...

    Start Rite PT260 Parts list

If you google "What size capacitor do I need for a single-phase motor?" you should find your answer. Lots of charts and info came up for me. I seem to recall when I replaced the capacitor on my 1.5hp extractor it was not a specific rating and had some leeway. You could phone these people up...

Using an impact Driver for Screwing?

It is the preferred option of builders who do not seem to worry about chewing screw heads up, just as long as they can get the job done quickly so they can get back to the phone. They usually use them for fixing chipboard flooring down without drilling a hole through the flooring first, so its...

    help restoring a dining table

I'm guessing you meant cabinet scraper. I've found glass easier to use, as getting and maintaining a good edge on a scraper, along with avoiding dig-ins is harder for me as I do not use a scraper regularly. Colin

Advice on removing timber window frame in one piece

I'm careful with my money, BUT, is it really worth putting a second hand window in a new extension. How much are you going to save yourself. By all means try and get it out in one piece, to reuse in a self build garden room, or sell it on to recoup a few £'s. Colin

What is the correct chisel to use for opening metal paint tins?

Early in my teaching career we used to get the kids at school to make the tin opener like Pedronicus posted above. Times moved on though and the lip on metal cans changed, so all that happens is they get totally chewed up. I now wash out my 2.5L plastic "cans" and decant into these when needed...

Amazing Human Eye (not sure where else to put this)

We have mentioned the eye, but what about the sense of touch. When I started wearing varifocals I lost the ability to move in closer to magnify and see in more detail. Using fingertips you can feel if a joint has a lip or a hinge is not set flush. You can feel a human hair in thickness, or at...

Advice on creating a moulding on a massive beam

What about cutting a square section rebate out then planting a moulding in place. You could rework a a pre made handrail moulding. Colin

    hearing

My 83 year old uncle noticed hearing loss in mid 70's, having spent earlier life as a production engineer in noisy factories. He ended up at Specsavers. He is very pleased with his hearing aids, costs and service provided. Colin

    A birch ply alternative found?

Update. I've been using the 18mm sheet of Poplar plywood I bought in before X-Mas. The surface is not as good as the Birch and does have some bruises. As mentioned above, the number of laminates is less but as they are thicker it is easier to sand out some fairly deep marks. The lower weight...

    Heated Towel Rail

I have 3 non heating system electric towel radiators, all fitted within the last few months. These have an Calmag CalRAd Inhibitor in them, mixed with tap water. Well that is what I supplied for the builder. They were all making a lot of noise and not getting as hot as previous electric towel...

I forgot to put the blade tension back on my bandsaw...

The only time I have de-tensioned my bandsaw was when it was on a year long lay up. The rest of the time it is kept under tension as directed in the little window of my Startrite 352E. I have never had blade drift. Colin

    What oil ?

Any oil will darken the timber. I have always used Danish Oil until recently trying out Osmo Top Oil. Yes it is expensive but the application is simple and the finish excellent. TopOil - Osmo UK I used the 3058 Matt, but the 3068 Natural might suit your needs better. Colin

I recall visiting an aircraft maintenance and refit hanger and seeing large sheets of lightweight honeycomb material used for internal walls. Colin
