    Gloves?

I have found the cheap gloves available from Toolstation are excellent when cutting and machining timber. The thin rubber type palms offer excellent grip and feel. When they get dirty or start loosing there grip I wash my hands with them on using washing up liquid and they get a new lease of...

    Door / skirting board trimmer

Have you looked at the LVT from Howdens? We specified it on our new build bungalow and it has now been down since about last June on a concrete underfloor heated slab. The strips in the herringbone design [longer planks available] we chose are 610 x 125 x 6. I think it can be laid up to 90m2...

    Eucalyptus Plywood?

I've recently been building wardrobes, bookcases etc. For the varnished internal parts as a replacement for Birch ply I used Poplar/Tulip wood ply, so not exactly the same. It is a lot lighter when it comes to picking up a sheet of 8x4 18mm. It is softer but takes an acrylic floor varnish well...

    Replacing a DG unit.

Working from the inside, make sure everything is clean dry and primed. Sit unit on glazing blocks, fix into place with 12 x 3 mm double sides glazing tape, smear of butyl putty on the face of the internal glazing bead and on the top edge of the outside trim to cover the raw edge of the tape and...

How to store treated timber gravel boards

Get some bricks to raise them off the LEVEL ground. Stack them laying flat with a stick every support every 600 to 900mm. Colin

What board for inside cupboard for shelf

I'd be happy with an 18mm plywood for shelves in wardrobes up to 600mm. You should also be OK with this in kitchen units. On open shelves of bookcases you would probably see sagging on this span and be better off going for a solid timber. Colin

    Belt Sander buying advice please

I have a 4" Makita belt sander and it would easily be up to the job, but I wouldn't last long. They are excellent machines but heavy to use. I would be looking at a stiff broom and light jet wash on those surfaces. Colin

OK...so where is the scam ?

I'm guessing you must have done your homework on the selling price before you posted your listing. I also do not know anything about Apple products, but if previous items the same have sold for £280 ish the offer to me sounds genuine. Colin

    Abrasives for Laguna 16-32

I sourced mine from EFA just outside Southend on sea in Essex. I lived in the area then and had used them for many years as a supplier for the Technology Department of the local Comprehensive school where I worked. I usually bought there "specials", where they could not be beaten on price. I've...

    Abrasives for Laguna 16-32

A couple of years ago I sold my 16-32 Drum Sander. The abrasives cost was high. You are far better buying a roll instead of pre-cut loadings and you really do need to source a cloth backed product. You will not find better than Jepuflex. I used 346, grit 150, 75mm x 50m roll. Colin

    Woodwork in the EVENING

In days of old, with young children and money short I did bespoke bits after a days teaching if I had the time. After my meal I'd think nothing of working till 9 or 10 at night if I was not making a noise. Now retired the habit has not died. If I realise a late glue-up or application of primer...

    Bobbin Sander replacement sleeves

I believe your machine is the same size as the Draper I recently bought. The pricing on the sleeves seems very variable. I sourced my replacements here:- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/195592668083 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225104283605 Colin

    How to achieve this colour?

I've got to say I'd be over the moon with the colour you have got with two coats of Ronseal Clear. It is bright and clean. To me the colour you have with a wipe of water reminds me of a Sauna. Colin

Help please - engineered flooring problem .

You say the floor has been glued down. If that is the case the installation is incorrect. The "boards" should be glued to each other and float on the existing floor usually with a combination thin foam underlay/dpc material. To me it looks like the floor has simply dried out after...

Wall bed/Murphy bed hinge help please.

Still go with simple bolt pivot at point A, but have a horizontal slot in the the vertical framework instead of a hole so you can pull the bed frame away from the wall before lifting/pivoting it up.. Colin

    Oil Cloth

Not exactly the same thing, but a common theme. Like others I've experienced rust on my cast iron machine tables this damp winter. After cleaning I've used Axminsters machine wax on them. I then de-rusted a plane my son had been "using" after it's return. I gave this a good wax along with my own...

Wall bed/Murphy bed hinge help please.

I'm trying to figure out why the simple pivot A option is not the answer, all you need to do is radius the top corner. This will not be seen when the bed is up as it would be inside the cabinet sides. When the bed was down it would not be noticeable as a pillow would surely hide that small area...

    Clamping Scarf Joints

I'd g-clamp the two pieces together with two long battens faced with masking tape and sandwiched around the two pieces. Colin

    Wire wool between coats (Tung)

What timber are you finishing? I had always used expensive Danish Oils but had to revert to cheap Toolstation own brand when finishing Oak veneer doors at our last house. With the exception of a few odd spots where I used scotchbrite I did not need to do anything between the rag applied three...

    Running out of time...

Three points:- - In my early 20's I pulled a park bench out of the skip at school. I repaired it with pieces of Oak and Iroko/Teak. It has stood outside unprotected since and given good service. Over 35 years later it needed some more attention and I was a bit annoyed that I could not find any...
