Keeping things dry in me little workshop

I have a 12mx2.7m tandem garage workshop. It's insulated on the outer wall and rafters and attached to an uninsulated 1920 house. We've lived here for 31 years and for some reason, nothing to do with anything I've done as far as I can tell, I don't get condensation. That said, on 1st October I...

Sanding discs on the lathe, do you glue them on or use something like velcro?

Or the man made corks from wine bottles and even the sole of your old trainers.

Sanding discs on the lathe, do you glue them on or use something like velcro?

Yes you can but you cut out having to mount the chuck, swap the jaws from the ones your using to turn the project you want to sand rather than keep the jaws on the chuck and swap it for a screw on disc. It would be cheaper to use the chuck but less convenient in my opinion.

Help me with my first ever mig welds, why do they look like Swiss cheese and will I ever improve (cry for help after being demolished on Reddit)

I've watched the fellow's YouTube channel Tim Welds . He goes through the basics of welding and offers an online course for $39. I've not subscribed to the course Tim Welds Course but he does explain things in a way that this 'new to metalwork malarky' woodworker can understand in his regular...

Sanding discs on the lathe, do you glue them on or use something like velcro?

Until I made a stand-alone disk sander I used the same method. Cheaper to buy a tap for your lathes thread and have a couple or more MDF discs with glued-on paper which is cheaper than loop-backed paper and the bonus of having a tap to make other threaded discs, jigs and holders. Another...

    3D and cad

Desigspark and Fusion 360 are both good programs for what you are wanting to design. But, on my present medication, I get brain fog and need to read or follow instructions a few times before it sinks in. So maybe I have some similarities to your stroke symptoms. So, that said, if I was starting...

    Two QUICK Shop TIPS:

I have an oily rag as well as a rag-in-can to wipe over tools before putting them away. But I also use the rag to wipe the tip and screw thread on the CA bottle. This should help prevent the lid from sticking.

    Tool collecting addiction

Nice chisels and right-price metal hand planes are my weakness. Just love restoring them to a usable condition. This year I bought another Stanley No4 £5 and my first Stanley No3 £5. Just can't help myself. Thankfully the local Car-Boot season is over so saving my pennies until May next year.

Does a live centre need to spin?

If I was just starting out and could afford it I would go with Phil's suggestion above. Over the years I have acquired or made the equivalent of most of those attachments. If the money is not available, get a live centre to get you going and save up for a good head chuck. That's the end you...

    Hinge Jig

Wonder how long it will take one of the clever people here or at Thangs to make their 3D-printed version of the same thing. I would if I found a need for one. There are plenty of hinge jigs on their site. I don't often have to fit door hinges so when I do, I do it by hand.

    Which hard varnish?

Our computer desktop is smooth, silk finish black melamine. It's about four years old and is used daily - I'm replying from it now. We use a mouse on it without a mat and see no wear marks. The only wax finish it gets is with a common spray furniture polish when dusting. So, I would suggest you...

    Gotten

Can I get rather than can/may I have not only stands out to my deaf ears from across a crowded room but I remember my American friend a few years back instructed her daughter to say may I have. I'm now losing hope in trying to get English people to call it a mortuary and not a morgue. We do not...

    Cricket bat bench polisher

Nope. I've made four now all very stable. This one is from 2016 and is still on display in the local cricket club so I understand.

    Cricket bat bench polisher

If you have a bat not worth saving, you could destroy it like I did with this one. It was made by request to be fair.

How did you learn to turn?

In the early eighties, I learned from Richard Raffan books and magazine articles. I wish I could have access to Stigs list of YouTubers at the time. I still watch Richard Raffan from time to time as he tends to be a little more for the practical turner.
