    Stove Flue Repairs

It certainly had. It was okay last season but had deteriorated very quickly during this very wet summer. Surprisingly, the flue is very sound and strong away from the folded seam, which just seems to have disappeared. I suppose "entropy rules" - after all it has lasted 15 years. :giggle:

    Stove Flue Repairs

With winter fast approaching, I decides to check out the workshop stove and flue. Only to discover that the wind cowl was lodged in a nearby hedge, and the section that acted as the chimney had corroded through at the seam. With both parts beyond repair, I decided to replace them along with a...

    Silicon Carbide Abrasive Paper

I've just checked the codes of some of the paper I ordered and the Klingspor is definitely showing as Silicon Carbide. The finer grit stuff is Amtech. This has no indication of what the grit is made from other than the grit size printed on the back, but no codes or other writing whatsoever. So...

Wacky things you've made and don't know what to do with!

It obviously kept you sane during lockdown :giggle: Though as someone who in his time has made a wooden adding machine, and a calculator disguised as a chest of drawers, I've made my fair share of useless items:LOL:

Work so hard you cripple yourself

With hard physical work there is an understanding that age will slow you down. It varies with individuals, but like athletics, it is a young "mans" game. One of the holiday jobs I had as a student, was stacking 1cwt bags of grass seed, as it arrived off large articulated lorries, to form huge...

    Silicon Carbide Abrasive Paper

Hi, @Sideways, thanks for the reply. I can be a bit of a minefield finding out what any particular wet-and -dry paper is made from. I have some code numbers on the back of the ordered sheets that I can check through, though nothing as helpful as the type of grit used. Klingspor's UK...

    Silicon Carbide Abrasive Paper

I am in receipt of an order I placed a few days ago for some Silicon Carbide paper. I notice that what has been sent is Kingspor which I have been always led to believe is Aluminium Oxide. Not a major problem, but I always prefer Silicon Carbide wet-and-dry for working metal and the Aluminium...

    Trim edge banding?

You can buy a cheap, plastic, edge-banding, trimmer, Or you can use a trim router with a bit with a bearing. Other options include a block plane and abrasive paper.

    Dusty Boys floor protection?

The builders who worked on our property last year used a rolls of sticky backed plastic that glued to the carpets. It was indispensable for keeping plaster dust off them and worked really well on the stairs. Though it was, in a sense an underlayer as dust sheets were used on top.

    US Election November 5th

One has to ask oneself -" Did America completely fall to bits during Trump's last Presidency? " If it didn't , them it will probably survive another term. The powers of a President are quite rightly restricted and if the democratic process elects Trump again, then that will be what the voters...

    Mike Pekovich and his Muntins

I'm not sure Google is always a reliable friend. :) As I have always understood it, in the UK, Muntins are the verticals that divide panels in such as doors and chests. Mullions relate mainly to windows.

    Tool identification

The main body is similar to the stone masons chisels, which usually come with two options at the striking end. One is mushroomed over, for use with a wooden mallet. The other - which this looks to be like- is tapered for striking with a soft iron mallet. Though I note that there does not appear...

    Is this oak?

Turkey Oak could well fit the profile, looks wise. But if this is a commercially produced item, then it is more likely to be a readily available kiln dried species. Logically, one should therefore look amongst the list of "usual suspects" Without there being any evidence of tannins, Ash would...

    Workshop inside roof

You will only really have encountered problems if your roof had been corrugated steel. and there was no membrane directly under it. This coupled with the Kingspan can cause bad condensation with water dripping onto machines on cold frosty days. As long as you have a barrier under the tiles you...

    Brummer stopping filler going hard?

My goodness, this is "a blast from the past" I wasn't sure that it was still being made. The interior one always smelt of 'Distemper' And, yes I am old enough to remember my father using that sort of paint. The Brummer's was always okay to sand, but if you used it over the heads of countersunk...

    Losing a pet

Kipling sums it up all too well in his poem 'The Power of the Dog' - " Brothers and sisters I bid you beware, of giving your heart to a dog to tear"

Paint spec for renovated sash windows

A while back I carried out some building work on an old farmhouse. At some point in time, as it didn't have skirting in the hall , some bright spark had painted one on, with bitumen paint. o_O It was easy enough to chip away the lime plaster top coat and affix skirting. but where it was painted...

    Blade length?

Ah... so this, or similar, could well have been the sort of thing used for cutting out the intarsia work of a certain furniture maker, by the name of "Monsieur Boulle". :giggle: .

    Blade length?

The context tells me that you are probably referring to a cutting rig of sorts - hence concerns over the blade length. But what I imagine from your use of the word 'Chevalet' is an easel.

    Keir Starmer

All this aside - Given the proven track record of Islamic terrorists to target the concerts of popular female pop-stars, it would have been remiss not to have provided protection, overt or covert, to such a high profile event. Imagine the repercussions for the police and the security services...
