    Pale Pine floorboards

I worked on an old property for a firm of architects, and they achieved this look by using floor paint on the old boards.

    Joke Thread 4 (closed).

It's the fault in the "Persian Carpet". You put it there, because only God is perfect. :giggle: OOPS! lost my link to the tiled floor

    Sharpening advice for dabbler

it is as good a solution as any, though there are plenty of copies of the Tormek, that are a lot cheaper if you wish to go down that route. On this forum sharpening queries seem to open up a whole "can of worms". The reason for this, I don't quite understand.

    Can you advise, please?

As bad as ever. :giggle: Didn't require good eyesight , as the accuracy was all down to the machine set-up and an accurate metal template.

What is wrong with some people?!

Drawing attention to the M&S advert isn't so much about complaining about the advert, but about linking it to what is happening in Gaza. In a sense, hitching a ride on M8S's own publicity. No matter how tenuous or weak the connections are, if you can keep linking as many things as you can to...

    Can you advise, please?

There is usually more than one way to solve a problem. A few years back I experimented with some holly and bog-oak chevron inlays - think Ernest Gimson, hay-rake, table. The numbers involved made it necessary to speed up the process somehow. The following photos show the process. End grain...

    Thoughts on billing

As customers, we all want to know exactly what things will cost before we commit. But with building work this isn't always possible. There are always the unknown, unknowns - to quote a certain "Mr Rumsfeld." Many misunderstandings arise over the difference between a quote and an estimate. With...

    New House, New Workshop Build.

I worked on the roof of an extension that had a lowered pitch to the tiled roof, The architect had specified Onduline as the roofing felt layer,. I'm sure it bought him a bit of kudos amongst his colleagues, but it was a bit of pig to make work. The main problem came when trying to trim around...

    I’m lost

Could it be air getting in at the base of the outlet spout- allowing water already in the system, to drip out? It might be worth changing the O ring/ washer at the swivel joint of the outlet spout in case it is letting air in. I have had a similar problem with a shower head that will suddenly...

    I’m lost

If it is a conventional tap washer arrangement in the taps then it looks like they need reseating as others have indicated. What tends to happen, if you don't attend to the drip quickly enough the water erodes a a tiny path in the brass seating. It will cost about 18 quid for the tool - well...

Before I Put the [redacted] Plane Through the Window

We all have a natural bias when planing, so it is going to be hit and miss as to whether we end up with a square edge. Using the correct plane is also helpful. A jack, fore or tri-plane is the one to use - not a smoothing plane. There will be a slight camber to the blades of these planes...

Good make Of HSS Twist Drills & Centering Drill Bits

There were so many poor quality "HSS" bits around at one point ,that I gave up and now only buy cobalt ones. Which is what I have I have done now for the last 15 years. If you want HSS bits that are half decent then deal with an engineering supplier like Tracy tools, which should have all you...

    Gluing oak plank

The glue joints between boards can fail, at times, for what appears to be no obvious reason. I have had this happen with both Cascamite and PVA. If it is not low temperatures or old faulty glue, it could be over clamping. Too much force, to try and close up gaps can lead to the glue being pushed...

    Rulers.

I wonder to what extent the subdivision of the inch was something that varied across Europe. I suppose that the subdivision into eighth and sixteenth, etc, is something that we are used to in the English speaking part of the world, though logically speaking 1/12ths would make a lot more sense I...

    How would you make this?

Now I can see the photo properly, courtesy of @Yojevol. I'm not sure what the curved panelling brings to the design. other than to give you the feeling that it is already" Pimm's o'clock" :giggle: This back panel I would make using thin flexible MDF, glued back-to-back, with the stiles and...

    Filling holes in oak

It depends on the look you are after. Wax sticks of a matching colour would do nicely and will stop your eye automatically homing in on the blemish. If you like a fiddly challenge , you can use shallow, diamond shaped pieces of oak to patch in to the top surface. And, to give you a fighting...

    How would you make this?

Re the seat I would make it as a rectangular frame from 2x2 timber with a couple of braces from front to back. I would fasten 18mm MDF to form the seat with a slight overhang to the front with a scotia or other moulding tucked into the rebate To fix it I would use several large gauge screws...

Yes, it was, I was trying to remember the name without any success. :)

Anyone familiar with the Hager copy device LP320-F

I once saw a video clip of Karl Holtey turning some knobs for his classic planes, in something exotic like cocobolo. He had a really simple copying device that he no doubt made himself, If I remember correctly it ran off a flat bed fixed on top of his lathe The tooling was fixed at the correct...
