Looking for 20mm Router cutter to make MFT type top..

Be aware that many “20mm” bits for MFT tops bore a slightly oversized hole; the ‘made for the job’ Festool bit I used gives a ~20.15mm hole so I had an engineer pal grind it down to make a snug fit with the 19.95mm Benchdogs. There’s a Trend 20mm bit that works well, but it’s 1/2” shank. Trend...

    Portable MFT - my version

Did you get the MRMDF top, or just regular?

    Benchworks tool cart

I bought plans for it way back but never got around to the build as it’s strictly ground-floor ie you need to take everything off it to get it upstairs, and back then I was starting to do a lot more bedroom furniture. Nothing to do with Festool BTW - this was a Tim Wilmots design back in 2013...

Define 'normal'🤷‍♂️ You want the 12mm kiddies size? Of course that's available 👍

Best glue to attach ceramic tiles to MDF ?

If you have a hot-melt glue gun then Tecbond 213 is made for this purpose - TECBOND 213 / 15mm Economical Glue Sticks | Glue Guns Direct - Glue Guns & Glue Sticks UK Pretty good general purpose hot glue as well, which is handy as you'll have 1Kg of it to use up...🤔 Otherwise I'd expect any...

What are the basic 'dogs' I need for my new bench? Theres alot of choice!!

Some good advice above, and totally understand re. the baffling array of dogs available. There should have been a couple of sets available from Benchdogs.co.uk to go with the video, but they‘ve been hit by Covid and are well behind, unfortunately. They were based around the rail square though -...

Festool Rotex 125 or ETS EC 150/5

I have the Rotex 125 and it is a bit skittish; not difficult to handle, but there’s a knack to it. I have the older ETS150/5 which is my go-to sander for most things. The ETS EC is a very good machine by all accounts, and would be my choice between the two, unless I had specific need for the...

    Dust extraction and track-saws

Not missing a trick exactly, it’s just that the dust collection on the entry-level saws simply isn’t as good as those that have dust extraction designed in from the start. Entry-level tracksaws can cut straight and can cut clean with a decent blade, but there’s a reason why the bigger brands...

Workbench tops what material HDF?? MDF Ply

Well, it’s prettier, I guess 🤷‍♂️ I’m sure Investwood, the company behind the Valchromat brand will tell you they are all kinds of differences vs MRMDF though they seem reluctant to actually specify those differences, preferring to compare themselves to regular MDF. Go figure.

Workbench tops what material HDF?? MDF Ply

Yes, I treat all mine as a matter of course; I show the process in the video I linked to earlier. Stain, hard wax oil, lacquer, use whatever you have - I've used them all without any problems, but - and I'm going to shout this out loud - YOU NEED TO USE DECENT MDF IN THE FIRST PLACE! Use MRMDF -...

Workbench tops what material HDF?? MDF Ply

Yes, setting a strip of easily replaced 6mm into my MFT tops makes them last a fair bit longer, but at they end of the day an MFT top is a consumable item to most people. I don’t think I’ve ever used one that wasn’t MRMDF, but if you feel the need then Birch ply would be a good option. Looks...

    The wonder of the domino

Yes indeed. A unique product combined with a certain amount of tool fetishisation stokes demand; throw in annual Festool price hikes and no real competition and you get a tool that’s essentially free, provided you keep it for a few years.

    MFT - Why 96mm?

Yes, there’s a link on that video to this old thread on Festool Owners Group that explains the 32mm system well:- 96 mm MFT hole spacing The 96mm spacing is an extension of that, AFAIK.

Big thank you to Peter Millard

That’s disappointing, though as I think I said at the start I haven’t seen them around for a while; I wonder if the more recent ones were made to different standards. Pretty sure I still have the one I used in the video knocking around, happy to send it to you if I can dig it out? Message me...

    Random Orbital Sander, which padsaver?

Sorry, I should have been clearer; Festool have their own hook & loop (of course they do...) and Abranet doesn’t work well with it. Other brands work just fine, so I’d have to presume that Mirka chose not to support Festool with Abranet. So, six of one, half-dozen of the other. 🤷‍♂️👍

    Random Orbital Sander, which padsaver?

My biggest issue with Abranet is that the grits are coarser than others that I’ve tried ie P120 abranet is more like a P80 with other abrasives, so it ends up being one more thing to have to think about, which is never a good idea in a busy workflow. Secondly the hook and loop on abranet really...

    Random Orbital Sander, which padsaver?

Let me be the voice of dissent and say that I’ve never used a padsaver, don’t like the way they soften the pad - makes it too easy to round over narrow edges. Not a fan of abranet either - I know, sacrilege; I expect to be burnt at the stake at the next clan gathering. 🤷‍♂️

    MFT clamps.

I have both the original Festool lever camps, and the original (blue) Axminster ones. At the time the Axi ones were significantly cheaper, but had a few rough edges (bare metal on the clamp head face, coarser ratcheting, generally a bit less polished) but were worth it for the saving. Then Axi...

I made a boom arm for a cable, hose or airline...has anyone else made one?

Nice job! I haven’t made one, but I repurposed a commercial one (Manfrotto) that I had left over from the photographic days when I first set up the workshop ~20 years ago. Works great, and is telescopic, which can be handy. You can get much cheaper versions these days from eg Neewer. 👍 Velcro...
