Why engineering should be a woman's game

I also hate the way they bull up jobs now with fancy names! I suppose I will have to call myself a wood technician. I have to admit that I didn't really know what a Civil Engineer was I assumed they built roads. Mind you when I left school there wasn't much choice in jobs as the...

Guy Martin in India on TV

He is a great guy. (no pun intended) He works around the corner to my timber merchants and can often be found at the burger van over the road. (When he's not jetting around the world) He really is a great character and just the same as he is on TV. I love his programs and also have my fingers...

    Lipping MDF Shelves

I would lip it with 1" hardwood but a better solution would be a torsion box shelf, far stiffer and lighter for longer shelves.

    MRMDF

I use Medite and that is also only a green core unless it is in thin sheets. Yes, MRMDF makes a big difference when it comes to finishing it. Worth the extra few bob IMO.

    Pull out wardrobe

As has been stated you need very heavy duty runners for that. They are available from accuride and can hold up to around 120 kgs but they are very expensive. I have just built some pull out shoe racks and had the same dilemma. I ended up using pull out larder running gear which can take the...

    Sanding Sealer before lacquer?

If using Morrells clear lacquer there is no need to seal the wood, a couple of good coats of the lacquer will do it. HTH.

    Another built in Finally fitted!

I got back to this job this morning and fitted the new pelmet. Glad to say it is all finished now and the customer is very happy with it. :D

    Using festool 500

On the side of the base plate there is a small step, this indicates the centre line of the cutter. HTH.

Router collet extensions. Already tried 2 of them ...

Another vote for the Xtreme Extension here. I have had it for a few years now and it is fine. I use it in my table with a Hitachi router. You have to follow the instructions for making sure it is in balance by rotating it in the collet but once set and marked it works fine. I do like the quick...

    Another built in Finally fitted!

At long last I have got to a stage where I can post some pics of the fit. What I expected to take two days has taken three so far! I still have to return to make a deeper pelmet due to problems with the original frame that was fitted. Apart from a bit of snagging and the pelmet it is finished...

    Anyone used Idigbo?

I have made a set of gates out of it in the past. I agree with all of the above and add that it smells like Cat pee when cut. It also stains a green colour if you don't remove PVA glue from it.

Could you ship some of that heat over here? It has been hovering around zero here for weeks now....I hate the cold. :(

    Adverts on the BBC

I have to admit that that is one of the reasons I don't subscribe to any of the Tv channels as there is so much rubbish on them. I can't even understand why we need things like the Tivo box to record programmes as they repeat them every couple of days on each of the channels. As for the BBC and...

    Car body spray on MDF?

The Morrells sealer is a single pack very much like sanding sealer but thicker. It has rapid drying and sinks into the upper fibres of the MDF making them 'hard' once dry about half an hour later it can be sanded to a smooth finish ready for the primer. HTH. Oh almost forgot, if you use...

    Car body spray on MDF?

This unit was prepared and painted as I described using 2K Morrells paints and primer/sealer.

    Car body spray on MDF?

I can vouch for Morrells paints and primers they work well. There are two sure fire ways to seal the edges of MDF the first is Morrells MDF sealer and the other is Zinnser bin. Both of these will seal the edges of MDF within one or two coats. Morrells sealer is nitrocellulose based and the...

    Another built in Finally fitted!

Hi Dave, I paint the edges of the MRMDF. I give them one coat of sealer, two primer followed by two coats of colour.

    Another built in Finally fitted!

If you mean the runners on the shoe racks, no they are soft close runner sets from pull out larder units. I keep my eyes peeled on e-bay for these as it's cheaper than buying a pull out larder and only using the runners. the runners on the chest of drawers are full extension soft close from...

    Car body spray on MDF?

Yes you can use 2K car paint on MDF with the appropriate primer and sealer but no matter what you do you will still get the cracks appearing on the joints maybe only thin cracks but wood and sheet goods do move. HTH.
