    Help identifying a mystery wood.

The desk surface? It's a piece of veneered particle board from Ikea. I think the veneer is oak, although it doesn't make a very good desk surface with the open (and unfilled) grain. Thanks very much. I guess I should've taken a photo in the first place instead of trying to be clever.

    Help identifying a mystery wood.

It's actually a scan! I'm not too upset about the detail since it's about as good as my camera could get it, but it does kill the contrast. http://iforce.co.nz/i/kfa5xkzt.3z3.jpg Here's a huge photo with my disgusting greasy thumb for scale.

Both pieces are about 8mm thick so I could bandsaw them. The box idea was more to take advantage of the smell since you could get away with not finishing the inside. It'd be a shame to waste the smell on something like veneer or marquetry. In my experience walnut smells like urine and has a...

    Help identifying a mystery wood.

I've fixed the link so now you can just click on it. I took the thing to the builders merchants today but forgot to ask the fella if he had any idea by the time I got there. I also found another one in the box bookmatched to the first. I figure the guy was using these for knife handles...

    Bench Drill

I'd also reccomend Axminster. They're a bit pricey but they've never let me down on delivery or selling me lemons. I feel most cheap tools are much a likeness at in same price ranges, often different manufacturers sell the same exact models but painted different. I got this exact drill from B&Q...

    Help identifying a mystery wood.

Here's a scan, just linked because it's huge for the sake of grain detail. The full jpeg is 50x50mm. http://www.iforce.co.nz/i/goyjqbbs.iq5.jpg It came in a box of various bits of hardwoods, which I bought as a kind of sample pack because whoever owned them took good care in labelling the...

    possible workbench?

Just a couple of days ago I bought a conference tabletop, veneered mdf with rounded 4mm edging, since I found it cheaper than it would've been to buy just the veneer itself. The only downside was that I had to actually go into the place. It's like a vision of hell.
