I need to be more OCD about machine fettling - as you say accuracy is key. I need to find my feeler gauges.

EB HC260M Planer Thicknesser set up & manual request

YorkshireMartin: Thanks for the detailed help - that's great. Lots to take in but all sound advice it seems. The straight edge is the 36" Veritas so it almost reaches end to end...& it is possible that I lifted it by the table (but not again though). I didn't even know about machine table wax...

EB HC260M Planer Thicknesser set up & manual request

Evening Gents, I have recently acquired an EB HC260M as well as a long, pricey, straight edge & now need some set up advice please. 1) Both tables are flat but with the straight edge resting on both tables (& obviously spanning the cutter block) it shows a small gap in the centre - both tables...

    Motor heating up, advice needed

Just a few thoughts; There is a cooling fan at the back of the motor with a cover over it.. is that in place & not rubbing against something or blocked with fluff ? Microfarad is shown as uF.. & if you look the motor's data plate this value will be shown & then you can compare this with the...

    Old (blue) Record/Coronet Lathe noise

Ha.. solved .. just the slightest play on the spindle (?) pulley, hardly noticeable, but with some handling it then became much more pronounced, but still not a lot. Eventually I found that there were 2 grub screws & the lower one was loose enough. It now runs sweetly - ace. Thanks Myfordman.

    Old (blue) Record/Coronet Lathe noise

Hello Myfordman, I didn't suspect the grub screw or key as I am sure that there's is no play anywhere.. but that makes more sense than bearings. Bearings don't really clank. I'll take a much closer look tomorrow. Thanks a lot Togs

    Old (blue) Record/Coronet Lathe noise

Hello Gents, I have on long term loan an old, blue, long Coronet lathe. It looks like the old version of a Record CL1. It almost always makes a loud clanking noise, especially under load. For ages /years & didn't think much of it until I used another machine & also read a comment in the For...

Recommendations for external doors joiners/supplier DIY pls

Hiya Mike, I will take some pics when it's light. The frame seems in good condition, even after 105 yrs. I didn't think to measure the door frame for square or being co-planar as nothing is square in an old house is it ? ..the back of the house is at least 20mm wider than the front ..& it's...

I need recommendations for a good joiner or quality door supplier/installer please. I would prefer someone local to Brum but...

    Salutary lesson for joinery professionals

My academic standards are fair & I have a fair understanding of business but no one can teach you who to trust & who will or won't pay. I have no skills in trust - I am too nice. There is a fair amount of stress in just doing my job, to then come home to bookkeeping & taxes ( not to mention the...

    Richard T

Mrs T, I am so sorry to learn of Richard's passing...& shocked.. & saddened. I have not been on here for a while (a year or more it turns out) & have just this minute found out. I popped round once to buy some holdfasts (& possibly got some wood cut down on another occasion) & went home &...

    Salutary lesson for joinery professionals

Hello Gents, I am in the initial process of getting an extension built.. which I have no previous experience of. I have asked an architect to draw up the plans which should be agreed in the next week or so. They will be sent off to planning & building control then be sent out to tender (to 3...

Rutlands japanese Chisels - opinions please.

Thanks Gents.. It's tricky for me to decipher all the blurb from truth & read all the opinions made over the years & then be objective.. especially late at night when it's the only time I have to look things up. I hadn't noticed the lack of bad reviews on Rutlands, which is obvious now it's...

So following on from all your pieces of advice I bought the 'Jacobs' chuck from Arc Eurotrade & also went to Axy ..they didn't have the light pull drive on the shelf & I forgot to get a Face Plate...& showing an un usual bout of self control I decided a jawed chuck could wait until I really...
