    Bandsaw blades advice

Hello Derek. What blades do you use & do you mill acurately with them? ..or course I'm not expecting to through & through cut an Oak tree but I'm after an acurate, dependable cut through 70mm section if possible...& up to 100mm if I could be so lucky. As I've said I use the blade it came with...

    Wenge or not

Hello Gents, I'm on a bit of a roll it seems as I've been asked for another quote (I've only just got my first real commission - for 3 pieces !).. however as life is never easy there's a problem - the prospective customer wants a cabinet made of Wenge. I read that this is an endangered...

Hello Gents, I've an ok Record BS250 with a blade that I'm finding it difficult to cut straight with the blade it came with as I expect it's for cutting curves. I need to cut 50mm wide x 7mm thick strips acurately & am thinking of buying a/some new blade/s to improve things - can you give me...

    About buying timber..

(I've said this before but) I go to a saw mill in Warwickshire - very near Studley- where you can pick through an assortment of off cuts of very different dimesions or you can order exactly what size you want in whatever quantity you want all without any impatience, finger drumming, huffing n...

    starting woodworking

If you have a saw mill in your area then get down there n see if they've a pile of off cuts - mine has a huge piles of very cheap Oak & Larch. It's going cheap because it's badly kept with plenty of defects & therefore time consuming to mill but I've made a fair bit of nice (IMO) furniture from...

    Cute little hammer

Hello Gents, Those are very nice little hammers, I very much like the idea of making them to fit your 'style'. Could I ask a few questions on hammers/mallets please? I am planning on making my first mallet & am wondering about the design of the handle. I see some pictured here are turned but...

Buy green wood now or in winter?

Hello Olly, Thanks for your reply..is this problem to do with hot steam kilns or just accelerated drying? It makes sense about night time absorbtion of moisture ..misting my kiln every night would be a chore...BUT ha! we've just taken down a misting system from the factory where my workshop...

Buy green wood now or in winter?

Hello Twothumbs, 20% is the usual figure quoted for air dried timber & that might be needed for firewood...perhaps if it is sold as dried then that must be the level.. 20% is the usual starting point I usually get my timer at but I need 8 or 9%. You did the correct thing by waiting & leaving...

Buy green wood now or in winter?

Hiya Richard, Can you explain how exactly please? David Savage says kiln dried wood has the life sucked from it but I've never seen, felt or worked any wood where I thought that had happened. Most furniture must surely be made from kiln dried wood & the quality of the actual wood is never...

Hello Gents, I am in need of your help & advice again. I need to get on with a few projects & so I need to get in a good stock of Larch (& possibly Oak too but this is not so urgent) ... Switch wiring - advice needed

The sticker on the side of the old switch should have the manufacturers details & model 'number' of the part on it (Kity would not have made it). Google the details & see what you find. Not all switches switch the same i.e single pole single throw (SPST),double pole single throw (DPST) +++ then...
