Hi Jon, What is the advantage of using an arbor over a jacobs chuck? I cannot tell what they do axactly from the Axy site & what the differences are between the B's & J's but I guess they hold bits. I'm glad you mentioned the kiss test..I noticed the other day that mine does not meet on the...

Jacobs chuck..that's what I meant by drill chuck..ace. Good idea about drilling first ..although it means working with individual small pieces instead of 1 long piece that I can cut many from. Thanks !

Hiya Heatherw, (now I've YouTubed what one is) It would have to be a tiny Jam Chuck !..but if it'd work I'll give it a go. I've not got a faceplate but if I did would I screw the Jam Chuck to it ? How would I know what size thread in the faceplate to chose - just measure OD of shaft/spindle &...

    Turning Newbie toggle boring questions

Hello Gents, I am attempting my first project after my training day & only my second in all & I have a few questions do with equipment. I have the lend of a Record lathe with a live centre on the tailstock (which might be obvious) & I've bought Rind centres & 4 lovely new RS chisels..but think...

    Sauno Kiln Build

Hi Michael, I got Nyle plans from their website ..I think. A container with coldroom panels would be good..with tracks (railway like) to roll loads in & out with blower fans as used for kitchen ventilation.

Hiya Mike, Cargo straps - righto, I'll get some asap..Thanks for the tip. I agree that the foam is far from ideal & does dink easily. I was planning to clad it in 6mm ply but I might rethink it all (as you have) because today I opened it up to check to see if the inside had dried out & saw...

    Chair making

Wow -- that looks ace ! Also (as mentioned above) a stool is a good start while waiting for a course to come round. A friend of mine has a stool that her brother made at school, it's simple enough but stunning in it's simplicity & choice of wood (Elm)..but would she need a stool? One type of...

Hiya Michael. I've poured in some water (a fact that is not mentioned until late in the instructions so I strongly recommend you read through it all before you start) as the timber had been felled 12 months before it was milled a month ago so it was already pretty dry. To allow the centre to...

At last it's built & working..& smelling wonderful (I love the smell of steaming larch in the morning). So: ..I've a got a leak or 2 so I've topped up the water in it once in 3 days. & I've got another week at least of steaming before drying & then hopefully I'll be...

    Cutting/Dimensioning/Milling Jarrah advice needed

Sorry for the delay.. I was going to try & get it into the sunlight to get a better shot of it but I couldn't muster up the oomph required to shift it. This is the blotching I have found since I sanded down passed the silver weathering . ..man it is heavy.

    Anyone for Japanese Joints?

The book is in the basket - thanks for broadening my horizons further RJ. Practice is the key.. professional sportsmen still practice almost every day even when they are no1 although they've done that shot/jump/kick many thousands of times before & joints are the same. If that's your first...

Where might I find hinges like this in the UK?

There's a reclamation 'yard' in Moreton in Marsh that does new ironmongery like this - can't remember their name though. I'm not sure they do this exact design but it's worth a call/ look online.

    Adjustable shelves

I have a Dutch Dresser (like a Welsh Dresser but with glazed doors instead of open shelves on the top section) & in the top section is the saw toothed design..I took the idea of it & did this instead as I wanted thin sides & had no bandsaw at the time. This was only my second piece of...
