Buying a **** woodworking plane from Dictum

No, he's right. Your contributions to this thread have been unwanted and useless, the exact definition of rubbish.

I wonder what the risk assessment for that is ? Thanks, will try and catch a few and see what I get :-)

Thanks, an interesting view. Although a lot will depend on what he's comparing them to. At the price, I wouldn't expect perfection, but it would be nice to know what compromises there are with them. I've handled one in Axi and although it's very nicely made, there's just something about it that...

Buying a **** woodworking plane from Dictum

Not yet, with no reviews or user reports, it's a bit of a gamble. If I do I'll report back on what it's like. Yes, just tedious unhelpful and irrelevant comments spoiling yet another thread :-(

£10 for that lot ? what a bargain. Care to share where you can pick up deals like that ? please :-)

should i just bite the bullet and get a sorby pro edge?

Did you notice which section of the forum this was posted in ? I can't believe you're seriously suggesting using an Eclipse jig on a bowl gouge. It looks like the SPE is a seriously good bit of kit by the entire lack of negative comments here. The only downside is the initial cost, but they are...

Worth a try. See if they'll rip any big logs through the centre to get a flat face to work from, it will make future mounting and preparation much easier. Also end seal* anything immediately you get it to prevent splitting, especially important in the summer months and with some species that...

Actually he got the advice he needed on page 1 and acted on it. Hopefully he'll report back on what he's bought and how he's found it to turn.

    Timber - learning and costs

It may not be easy for many people to put a direct monetary value on their hours, but time IS valuable and needs to be considered. I really haven't enough free time to do all the things I'd like to, I doubt I'm alone in that, so try to never waste time. I'd rather be in the workshop than...

should i just bite the bullet and get a sorby pro edge?

I think he means the tool handle if it's fouling the PE. Not a sensible proposition though, having to refit a tool handle after every sharpening would soon get tedious with normal woodturning tools.

As they say there's no such thing as a free lunch. Unless it's actually from your own garden, there will always be a cost. Travelling costs money and time is valuable in itself. Some of the previous suggestions that need the likes of chain saws, band saws etc all have added costs, some...

    Timber - learning and costs

Did you start reading the thread from the beginning ? If so you'll notice the constructive post I made on the 2nd and that the OP has chosen to take up my advice for buying some decent cheap blanks from HoW and thanked me for the advice. I'm not involved with any woodworking on a professional...

When did the world go mad for Festool?

I don't think you do from those figures. If you're VAT registered and use normal VAT accounting, as opposed to being on the flat rate scheme. You would reclaim the VAT back on any purchases made for business purposes. So you could reclaim £100 if your tool retailed at £600 (£500+vat). You would...

    Hollow Chisel Sharpening

It works well and there is some stock at your local branch in High Wycombe. Worth a call to confirm before you travel, but it's less than an hour from St Albans.

If you read the OP he's asking about 90mm x 90mm timber because he doesn't want "skinny" bits any more. So how about bundling up a box of offcuts for the OP and offering them for the cost of shipping ?

    Timber - learning and costs

One thing to remember is that, luckily, not everyone is in that position. Advice offered doesn't have to start from an assumption of penury and can be based on would be 'best' regardless of cost. Some woods are wonderful to turn and with those you can learn the basics swiftly and be more skilled...

    Timber - learning and costs

How many 'kitchen worktop offcuts' aren't faced chipboard now ? It's worth bearing in mind that these forums are read by a lot of people (that don't contribute or read very widely) that might not understand why a chipboard kitchen worktop wouldn't be a good thing to learn to turn with if someone...

You seriously recommend that as "Good for learning" ? That pretty much reinforces my point.

Axminster High Wycombe "Festool Festive" 2nd June

This thread isn't a general moan about that particular store, just that 'event' that proved to be a dead loss, probably due to Festool's approach rather than Axmister's. In my many visits to the store I've found it well enough stocked and the ability to check stock online before a visit should...

    Timber - learning and costs

Shall we have a little reality check on your reply ? I think quite a few of the older experienced posters here sometimes loose sight of the difficulties of starting out in woodturning. The poster is someone who's only just bought their first lathe and hasn't the benefit of a fully equipped...
