    OTT ... or not?

Lovely bit of craftsmanship, but I'm not convinced by the choice of timber. It all looks a little gawdy and seems an inappropriate use of valuable tropical hardwood. I would have been more impressed if it had been made in local Maple or similar.

Could you post a link to the supplier please?

So who's going to wipe all their MP3 player copies.

Absolutely right. There are too many people that fail to understand the issue of intellectual property rights and aren't prepared to pay for other people's work. I think this is a issue harder to justify. If you buy a car a part of the cost is design, R&D, advertising etc, if you then crash it...

Which Planer/thicknesser is the best for Startup?

You will as soon as you start joining timber together. As Roger says the '260's are a good bet, but there's also a lot of affordable s/h machines on offer through eBay. Ensure that you can source spare blades for any machine though and assume you'll have to buy a spare set. Chances are a s/h...

Oak framed barn / workshop - DIY build!

An excellent job. I hope you enter it for Shed of the Year next year, it's streets ahead of most of the piles shown on C4 last night.

    Which vacuum cleaner for extraction

When worrying about dust and chippings there are two concerns, one is respiratory protection, the other is simple house keeping. Dust and chippings spread over a workshop, not only look messy, but can be a slip hazard and, more hazardously, a fire hazard. So even if the first issue isn't...

Just call Axminster customer services. They'll go off, measure one for you and call you back.

I lost an arm and a leg to a table saw

You've missed the point of the thought experiment. It's not about Axminster at all, but is a exercise in understanding all the factors(ie costs) that a retailer has to incur when starting to import and sell machinery. Too many people here seem to fail to understand this issue and just compare...

    Customer service.

I'm sure that's true. As someone with a small internet business, I can say that I always reply to any email I get as long as I can get Google to translate it and that covers almost all major languages now. These days there's no excuse not to, it's dead easy and similarly easy to reply in their...

I lost an arm and a leg to a table saw

I think that's a gross simplification and fails to take into account the problems and overheads of ensuring the products that are rebranded with their name conform to all the necessary legislation for consumer standards and safety. They also need to hold stocks of machines that can be used as a...

    The Lidl plunge saw

I'm happy to report it will. I contacted Axminster about their 165mm Axcaliber blades http://www.axminster.co.uk/axcaliber-co ... sel=951516 they have a 1.5mm kerf and the blade is 1mm thick. I ordered one and it fits the Parkside saw with no problems. On a first test cut the 40T Axcaliber blade...

Live center, chucks and finishing !

No answers ? a tricky one. On a technical level; Your photo isn't really clear enough to see whether the defect goes through the full thickness of the jaw socket you've cut. If it has, there's risk that it will break when it's remounted and tightened up, although an experienced turner should...

    Veritas planes

A final word on this: The plane arrived today at the bargain price, a little earlier than promised, and very lovely it is too. Worth waiting for.

    The Lidl plunge saw

My experience of the Parkside tools is mixed. Several have been fine and one failure, but I got a full refund on that so no problem. I'm waiting to get a better crosscut blade before I start to use it. From what I can see so far; It's the usual Parkside build quality, usable, but with a few...

    The Lidl plunge saw

From what I can measure, the arbor has a 1mm deep collar. The next problem is finding out what thickness the actual blades are. The only spec I can find is for CMT's 1.7mm kerf blade which has a 1.1mm blade thickness, so ought to fit. I'll email Axminster and see if they can supply further...

    The Lidl plunge saw

How are people finding the supplied blade ? I'm wondering whether it's worth fitting a better/different blade* before making the first cut through the splinter guard. From what I can see many of the alternative blades have a thinner 1.4 kerf and there are few alternatives with the same supplied...

Live center, chucks and finishing !

It looks more like a long fingernail bowl grind to me. Similar to the Ellesworth shape and the grinds Richard Raffan uses. As such they can be used on bowls, but as Phil says unwary use will result in a big catch and isn't really that recommended for novices. Stick to the more conventional...

Live center, chucks and finishing !

The Axminster SK114 is available to order with a 20mm x 2mm thread. I think it's possible to get replacement backplates fitted if you ever swap lathes in future, but do check with Axminster first on that. An absolutely Rolls Royce choice that will hold it's value well, but not cheap. Toolpost's...

Anyone going to the Axminster 'Festool Demo Day' tomorrow?

Thanks for the report. Good to know the 'paid for' days are good value.
