    Pits in my turning

I doubt that'll help much. I've just been watching Cindy's DVD on making finials and having seen it in use now, I'm still not completely sure I understand the exact geometry of that tool. I think it's success is due to the niche nature of it. It only gets bought by experienced turners like KimG...

    Pits in my turning

The route to it has changed, it's now at http://www.cindydrozda.com/handouts_Pdf ... pening.pdf Although the photos aren't really good enough to really work out the subtleties of the shape and cutting geometry. I'm not sure that this particular tool would help the OP with his particular...

    Startrite 301

They were originally supplied with a double ended ring spanner 13mm & 19mm which fits all the nuts on the machine. You may like to take your own in case it's been lost. For transport it's advisable to remove the table as well, it's pretty heavy in itself. To get it off you'll need to take off...

    Startrite 301

Yes, it can. Four bolts. When new they were supplied separate from the base and it needed assembly.

    Vibration

Certainly a step up from what you have now. Very heavy, but will need new chucks etc and not very 'domestic friendly' That's not much of a step forward from what you have now. That's when you turn the big bits though. The larger the piece, the greater the effect of any timber variation in...

    Vibration

It's unlikely to be the bearings if you can't feel any play in them. Does the worktop move much when you're turning these bigger blanks ? If so, that's an issue you may be able to resolve with a more rigid mounting. If you wanted to test the chuck you could try making up a big disc of MDF(or...

Avon lathe - id and valuation

Looking at the brochure at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/althea/image ... nSpec1.jpg it looks like the 3/4" 1MT spindle was an additional non-standard option, so that's what you may have. Your one is the first one I've read of with the non-standard spec. Looking at the pictures of the OP lathe, I...

Avon lathe - id and valuation

Sure it's a Tyme Avon ? like http://www.lathes.co.uk/tyme/ or http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/althea/tymelathes.htm Toolpost also list the Avon with a 25mm x 2mm thread http://www.toolpost.co.uk/pages/Chucks_ ... chuck.html Not sure why they should be an authority on Tyme lathes.

Avon lathe - id and valuation

    That's incorrect. The Avon has a 25mm 2mm thread headstock with a 2MT

Avon lathe - id and valuation

Yes, it's a Tyme Avon, originally sold in about 1985. Although not rusty it doesn't look in very good condition with the paint spills etc. As Bigbud78 says they don't command particularly high prices as they're quite old now and it's obscure headstock thread makes getting extras for it...

    Box turning books?

Turned Boxes 50 designs by Chris Stott GMC Publications Good book with some interesting designs. I like the way he doesn't think you need to know every tool cut once you're aware of the basics.

    York Minster timber sale

The aspect to look at is the contract of sale and any terms that might be included. It's possible that as a condition of the sale the materials couldn't be re-purposed or resold using the York Minster 'brand' in any way.

    York Minster timber sale

It's not being particularly sold as something to reuse for commercial gain as a timber merchant would. Consider the ethics of buying something from a charity like this and then reusing it to make an identical product to the one the charity sells for it's self, but for your own personal gain...

How Do They Make It To Retail For This Price?

In the case of Lidl and Aldi they also use some items as loss leaders to just get people into the store. Many of their power tools must come into this category.

    York Minster timber sale

It would be unwise to be complacent about that. Trading standards are known to keep an eye on craft and boot fairs, any suspicious claims can be checked easily enough. Similarly internet advertising is easily checked too. Large organisations including ecclesiastical buildings do control their IP...

    York Minster timber sale

Given that they retail their own pens made from their own Oak, you might find that there are conditions of sale that exclude reselling it.

Biscuits - Router bit or cheapy dedicated tool?

Another vote for a dedicated machine from here too. Although I'd avoid the dirt cheap Draper and Silverline models they look pretty ropey. The Erbauer and Einhall look to be the cheapest ones to consider. I use an old Freud model and it's been extremely useful over the years. The main advantage...

    Moving heavy machines

Go back to your VW dealer and look at a Passat estate. Very low lip, huge flat load space, low depreciation and dirt cheap to run and insure.
