Ebay find - mysterious table saw-

No need to apologise :-) I was just entertained by your enthusiasm or should that be impetuousity ? Just be careful. Table saws can be dangerous, especially old ones that don't conform to modern safety standards. Read up on using them before switching it on for the first time.

Ebay find - mysterious table saw-

Welcome to the forum. 29mins between asking for advice and jumping in without an answer ? hmmm. First job will be making a cover for the exposed belt drive. The lack of an effective riving knife will make the saw risky to use, maybe you could(should) make a new one. You'll also need to check...

Ever thought of reading the forum section title before posting ? That post relates to the "General Chat (off topic)"

    sphere turning jig

Why the rush if you're only working on 'one offs' ? From what I can see the jig makes sense if you're making lots of spheres, but might prove an expensive indulgence for single projects. It wouldn't be difficult to make a jig for final finishing of spheres, with some thought it could be...

    More Ebay madness

I'd guess that they didn't check the Axminster site on the day it finished. The price is normally £1499, but this weekend it's on a 'Black Friday' price.

    More Ebay madness

Here's another; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jet-JWBS-18Q- ... true&rt=nc So that's £27 more than today's price for it brand new with a full guarantee (the auction only has a three month warranty).

    Cheap Trend diamond stones

Just spotted these on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221944472129? ... EBIDX%3AIT £5 for a coarse diamond stone seems too good to miss.

please recommend me a cheap 6" sharpening wheel.

I like the O'Donnell ruby wheel for good performance sharpening turning tools http://www.toolpost.co.uk/pages/Grindin ... heels.html Toolpost can also supply any necessary adaptors too. It'll make any old grinder perform really well :-) Don't get hung up on jig envy. You can make your your own...

Book Review: The Essential Woodworker by Robert Wearing

The point is that with terrible production values you usually can't see if they have anything worth showing because it's out of focus, out of frame, inaudible etc... or of course that the video is just so dull you've stopped it and moved on.

Book Review: The Essential Woodworker by Robert Wearing

How painfully true. Not only are many of these videos unreliable with their content, but the production values are TERRIBLE. If they make videos so badly, how bad are their woodworking standards ?

    spindle mounting question

As others have said; Making your own cone to fit over an existing pointed live centre can be done. Maybe a little trickier than it might seem as you need to get a snug fit over the centre, but quite doable. Alternatively Axminster make a nice live centre with interchangeable tips...

Bandsaw for £500, narrowed it down to 4 but need some advice

LewisM It might help if you let us know what sort of work you'll put the saw to. For just general cabinet making, the requirements will be different to, say, using it to convert big lumps of wood for turning where every mm of capacity might be important in future, but fence precision is less...

    UKIWS? (Woodturning Symposium)

The credibility of the event has raised a notch now. Axminster T&M have signed up as a sponsor.

    UKIWS? (Woodturning Symposium)

I don't see that as a problem. There's nothing wrong with an event by woodturners for woodturners. Trying to target the event at both the lay public and enthusiastic turners seems to just make the event harder to run and promote.

    Forstner bits

I've been very happy with Axminster's own brand http://www.axminster.co.uk/axcaliber-forstner-bits not the most expensive, but they seem to work much better than the cheap rubbish from Toolstation/Screwfix etc

    UKIWS? (Woodturning Symposium)

I can understand how that would be very frustrating. It's just daft to expect that sort of provision for what is basically a bunch of friends meeting in someone's house. It would be the same as asking the host of a dinner party if they have any food hygiene qualifications. The event in Coventy...

    UKIWS? (Woodturning Symposium)

My scepticism is based on how they can deliver a good event at such a low price. There's not much fun in attending events that are so crowded that you can't see or hear what going on or don't have the resources to work properly.

    UKIWS? (Woodturning Symposium)

I'm sure you're correct on this from what I've seen. That may be less true. Right now a lot of people are retiring with generous pensions, however a vast number of schemes that have provided these good pensions have been closed in recent years. The longer term outlook is less rosy for those in...
