    Electric vehicles

Probably just a GPS sat nav with the exact location determined by your phone call. It's not just route finding that's the problem in rural areas, it's how autonomous vehicles can handle narrow roads and obstructions (herd of cows being moved, minor flooding etc).

    Electric vehicles

Yes, they weigh more, but everything else is better as a result. Less fuel used, less emissions, safer, more reliable, more comfortable. You could make it lighter, but it would either have less functionality or cost more.

    Electric vehicles

Using a driverless pod summoned by app in rural Devon won't happen in my lifetime.

    Electric vehicles

It's still just science fiction, along with flying cars. We've had sat navs for nearly two decades now, but they're still not completely reliable. Mobile phone reception still isn't over all the UK.

But the Kuga uses half the fuel, has nothing like the exhaust emissions of the Allegro because of much better engine management. Then add anti-lock brakes, traction control, safer handling, air bags, crumple zones and better safety for pedestrians by design. Inside you get air con, sat nav...

    Electric vehicles

That doesn't add up; you'll still have the same number of people wanting to travel, probably at similar times, it just changes what vehicle they're travelling in and might free up some car parking spaces. The only way congestion is reduced is by getting people to travel together, a radically...

    Electric vehicles

Before there were SUVs we had estate cars and people carriers. They've effectively been replaced by SUVs.

    Electric vehicles

You've missed the point that often people need bigger cars. Try putting a baby buggy on a Twizzy, you can't. Try strapping a recalcitrant toddler into a baby seat in the back of a two door car sometime.

    Electric vehicles

Ever travelled in one of those ? They're DREADFUL and scary. Except people don't just buy a car to commute in. They want to go shopping, take stuff to the dump, take the children/parents out for the day, go on holiday in them.......

    Electric vehicles

All very well for cities and suburban lives, but I can't imagine how long it would take to roll that out across the whole UK, if it's possible at all. All the tests of autonomous vehicles seem to happen in places with wide streets and layouts like graph paper. The difficulties of getting that...

    Ax ultimate edge/Sorby deluxe/Tormek T4/T8 ?

I really like my Sorby. Fast and easy to use and the jigs work well. The lack of an adjustable platform seems a proper omission from the Axi. I have tried wet wheel sharpening in the past and found it painfully slow and the wheel wore too easily. If my Sorby got trashed/stolen I'd just buy it...

What has happened to my oak post?

Almost certainly wasps. A new teak seat without any finish here was getting attacked in our garden, a coat of Danish oil has stopped that (when it's coler I'll add a second coat too). Although it will look a bit 'finished' when first done, it will weather down in time.

    US Election November 5th

Quite, 100% of comments here by that account are political right wing posts, not a single comment on workshops or tools. Maybe the mods ought to take a look at what benefit this account brings to the forum.

You really have lost the plot if you think Starmer is 'hard left'.

    Labour's Employment Rights Bill

Nothing new. The rich have always subsidised classical art and the young have never been able to afford it.

    Winter fuel Payments.

Might be worth pointing out that the way IR35 was applied in some industries, freelancers didn't have a choice and had to create limited companies if they wanted to continue to work in them. Also the tax "advantages" had been severely eroded by 2020 to the point it often didn't give any...

    Winter fuel Payments.

Agreed. It seems deeply petty to start trying to make out a few civil servants might have benefited from working from home. Especially so when many were being paid to do nothing at all with furlough. Worse, those that had their work stopped dead, were unable to continue working in their industry...

    Winter fuel Payments.

I lot of people didn't think working from home was a perk, it was disruptive and difficult, sometimes even costly. You wouldn't have saved anything on commuting if you'd bought a season ticket, you'd still be paying car overheads like insurance & VED. Any actual savings would be difficult and...

    Winter fuel Payments.

Loosing those personal costs of working won't have meant they "did very well". Maybe try working from home and see how difficult it is. Do you seriously suggest civil servants should have had their wages cut because they had to work from Home ?
