    Poor quality from ManoMano

This is an example of how tricky it is to deal with ManoMano. The link you've posted isn't the same seller that I bought from, some of the description details are subtly different and my ad offered a 30 day return period. I've got the original ad saved on my hard drive. FWIW it also looks like...

    Poor quality from ManoMano

I recently ordered a "Precision Mortising Jig and 2 in 1 Loose Tenon Woodworking Punch Locator" from ManoMano.com There are several 'dealers' selling this product on the site at various similar prices. It appears from the photos on the site to be a reasonable copy of the Woodpecker 'Morty', an...

    Buying tools from china

You really can't have much of an idea of what profit Axminster are making on this. You'd need to know their finance costs, storage costs, how much their showrooms cost to run, whether the machine is exactly the same or how much adaptation Axi have to make/specify to conform to UK trading laws...

    Festool Domino patent

It's not Festool fans that a company need to appeal to, they'll already have bought in. The market is a pent up demand for a cheaper version from people that won't pay the Festool premium. If Makita or DeWalt can sell a DF500 copy at £450 they'll be in big demand. Yes, there's possibly some...

    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

Let me translate that for you; The production team exercised their statuary duty of care to ensure that participants didn't do anything that might hurt themselves or anyone else. It's not clever being dangerous.

    2mm diameter drill bit bends?

One thing no one else seems to have mentioned is the quality of the drill bit. Lots of the hss drill bits sold cheaply or in sets are rubbish, especially the smaller sizes. I had to drill hundreds of small 1.2>2.2mm holes in brass sheet during lockdown and getting high quality German drill bits...

Why do we have so many issues with software programs

We've lived through the beginnings of digital photography and some features have been truly transformative. RAW capture is one. Anti sensor dust technology is another. Video capture has also made a major impact. But there'll always be a few people who just want the latest and 'best' and can...

Why do we have so many issues with software programs

It's only expensive if you choose it to be. You can continue to use old cameras and software and the cost is almost nothing. You were probably delighted with the results when you bought them, they haven't changed. Compare it to analogue photography when you had to pay for film and processing...

    Bandsaw Servicing

I think that transporting a big bandsaw for 'servicing' might in itself vibrate/knock out any fine adjustments. It sounds like what you really need is a workshop visit from someone who can set it up and explain to you how keep it in good adjustment. Try Record themselves and see what they...

    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

Possibly, or possibly not. The show can also make people think that they need thousands of pounds of kit and loads of space to do anything too. What would be nice to see is a hand tool only challenge one week to show what's possible without the expensive power tools.

    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

This is a really difficult issue for the contestants. Understanding how long a project might take when working at home is one thing, but working in a different TV environment is a whole can of worms. How much time will be saved by having the cutting list pre-made ? How much time will be saved by...

    Elu MOF96/02 Router Motor Problem

I wouldn't use a wire brush on a commutator. There's a risk of damaging the wiring and a risk of particles of the brush shorting out segments. Tooth brush maybe between the segments and glass fibre brush on the conducting surfaces.

    Starteite 352 tracking

I don't think a bandsaw blade should ever rub on anything when being set up. Under work loads it may rub slightly on guides and thrust bearing, but nothing else.

    Tyme Avon Lathe

You'll be lucky to find a faceplate to fit an Avon now. I don't think anyone manufacturers them new and all fittings for the Avon are rare secondhand. Your best bet is to get a self-centering chuck to fit, which are still available new from Record , then you can get a faceplate ring to fit that.

Tyme Avon lathe - which parts do I need?

It's pretty self-evident; Lift the headstock cover to see the drive pullies. Loosen the motor clamp on the end of the headstock and lift the motor up to loosen the drive belt. Then move the belt to the required pulley set. Lower motor unit to re-tension the drive belt on the new pulley set and...

    Paul, his version of sharpening

I bought a dovetail jig, the same afternoon had finished all these for two drawers. Waste of about 20 cubic inches of wood, if I wanted to sell the jig I'd probably get back what I paid for it. Some might say they look too machine made, but that's their problem. I like them and so does everyone...

    Paul, his version of sharpening

Exactly. How long does that take ? How much timber does that waste ? How much does that waste cost ?

    Paul, his version of sharpening

    Hand to eye coordination.

    Paul, his version of sharpening

No, you're missing the point. Hand skills need practice, often lots of it, and some people really just won't be capable of the needed degree of dexterity. Setting up a machine is simple process that just needs knowledge and understanding.
