    Retractable casters

Not sure about those ones, the ones we used were... but they were hundreds 10-years ago

    Restoration advice please

There’s lots of YouTube videos on restoration, many are useful, but some are toss and to be avoided

    Retractable casters

I’ve used to them on non-wooodwork machinery, not sure how well they’d do on a rough floor, but you could use a spreader plate of metal when needed Aidan

    Light Silicone Spray

Machinery wax is great, it’s pricey but good. Works nicely on clamp threads, the clamp bars to stop glue sticking to them etc... I don’t remember when I bought my tin, but it’s mostly full still after many years Aids

    What cost for European Ash

Where has anyone stated you have a double standard? I think you are getting worked up and need some tea

    Lamp base

Drill a big hole up from the bottom, a little hole through the top and a small one from the side, then you have room to manipulate the cable through, no fussing about lining them up and either plug the bottom or leave it open for maintenance (will also allow you to add strain relief on the...

    What cost for European Ash

That’s why it’s worth establishing a good relationship with your timber dude, one of mine waits till there’s no other customers around, then WAGs a total far lower than all the prices written on the boards :)

    What cost for European Ash

So far he’s been very coy about not naming the company, which is funny as if someone bought some overpriced crap pine from B&Q nobody would hesitate to name them, is a common double standard here. I think the understanding of the legal position is slightly off as although a quote is only an...

    What cost for European Ash

It does rather sound like someone is having a laugh, that said you also gave them a lot of money for nothing, which is rarely a sound plan. The reality is that people can charge what they want and other people can choose to pay it, I’m not sure you’d have any legal leverage on this one, though...

Commissioning a new cast iron table saw top.

Just don’t use silicone, other than that, don’t worry. Machinery wax is expensive, but one tin lasts years Aidan

Metal to metal - oil, wax or grease Metal to plastic - if you need a lubricant something is wrong Aidan

Commissioning a new cast iron table saw top.

WD40 then wax it, it’s a tool not a pet, don’t worry too much about it Aidan

    What cost for European Ash

Well those are some large pieces, but for sawn slabs big enough to get that out I would be thinking a couple hundred, unless the they are providing superb quality at a premium? who is the supplier? Aidan

    Poker chips

Not sure if it’s directly applicable but years ago whilst I was taxing a moulding company with some stupidly overcomplicated design, they said the most challenging things they ever made were poker chips, which kinda surprised me, considering what I was asking them to do Aidan

    Look what I picked up

Other than having a really good look for a makers label it could be any age, machine cut dovetails have been around for a very long time, they’re not much of an indicator of age over the last 100+ years There are always some stunning pieces going free or almost on marketplaces as tastes have...

    Mystery Carpenter’s Tool Chest Items

They could be marlin spikes, but they’d be hard to use like that and how many does W.Baker need?! If he was a boaty person, we used pins like that for holding sail cloth to the loft floors during layout. However for my money, they look like podgers, for drawboring dry assembly before using...

Speeding up sanding process (seeking advice)

Time to partner up! This isn’t my business area (hobby only), but when you can’t keep up in-house, it’s time to out-source, we do it all the time for that reason. I’ve got an ash slab that could be drum sanded, I don’t have one but there’s a local carpentry company just round the corner. I...

    Wadkin or record power

Is the Wadkin really an option if it doesn’t have the safety features in a commercial setting? Aidan

River bank edging - Which timber?

Is this a DIY job exclusively? The canals use steel pilings that lock together, but the tool to drive them in is not small and subtle. Gabions would be the old fashioned way of doing it, and also the modern way with stainless cages and cobble they look lovely in the right circumstances. Aidan
