    Router plane

Have you thought about what that tolerance means to the thing you’re making? Unless I’m misunderstanding how a router plane is used, that difference could translate into a difference in cut depth either side of a rebate of something like 0.005mm, what are you making where that’s a problem?

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

If he was in the USAF 80 years ago, he’d be the one laying armouring over the wingtips of the aircraft. Old tools being better than news ones comes up about once a week here, has done for the last decade or so, it’s survivorship bias coupled with an inability to account for inflation. My old...

    Reduction gear for headstock?

I’m a bit confused what you’re trying to make, but it sounds like some form of pressure vessel? You can machine PMMA just as well as PET, neither is fabulous but they are often clear which others are not. So POM is lovely and slippery, but usually white or black. PA is tough but also usually...

    Cast iron corrosion

But everyone knows cast iron is best, none of that cheap pressed steel or aluminium that modern cars are made from… this sounds strangely familiar

    Lathe drives

1-With a pole lathe, has the advantage that when you hurt yourself the power shuts off. 2-They had accidents and frequently got injured

    Routing question.

Bearing guided sander drum and a template if you have one. Ordinary sander drum and caution if you don’t.

    Cast iron corrosion

So one untreated piece of iron, and one with a corrosion inhibitor, and one was better? You gotta try paint, it’s freaking awesome!

Which wall fastenings for twin slot shelving?

Sounds like the hole in the brick is too large. Ideally tap the screw into the plug into the wall before tightening it, by which point it should be biting in ok

    Cast iron corrosion

Agreed, many marketing claims are weird if you’ve done a bit of science at school, reminds me of the snake oil claims of a couple of centuries ago, it was mostly mineral oil, that’s good for stopping rust too

    Lathe drives

I’d say they learn far faster, due to the access to information that didn’t exist 30-years ago, but that’s an unpopular opinion…

    Purple Heart & Japanese Oak

Purpleheart in a box stays purple, we’ve had some for years as once cut… it smells of dog poo

    Reduction gear for headstock?

That might work, you’d be removing any alignment you had and make the gearbox do that for you, plus the cantilever load. Maybe a local fabricator could do it for you?

    Reduction gear for headstock?

It’s not just the gearbox you’d need, you’d have to anchor that gearbox to the lathe, doesn’t sound practical, but nice alternative thinking If you’re only doing it once, can you jury-rig a cordless drill to drive the spindle which will be way slower? Might struggle on power but if you’re slow...

    Unusual plane

Should the original not be about 1.5% larger than the brass copies if that’s what’s happened

Old tools salvaged from my Grandparent's houses

It’s always interesting who has what old tools, we have a mixture of two sides of the family’s old tools, it’s clear which side had the money, those are the tools that are still working a century later. My recommendation is don’t keep things that aren’t immediately or going to very soon be...

    Mini track saw

If you want a tool for a single job then it’s probably not the most cost effective option, but if you want a go-to tool for the next decade, it’s maybe just the thing
