    Tips for improving woodworking accuracy

If you want to replace MDF furniture because you want to, go ahead. If you just want quality furniture, that doesn’t exclude using MDF.

Antimicrobial coating for my new, selfmade garden table?

The idea that wood is more hygienic than plastic has been around a long time, we did some experiments on surfaces years ago, admittedly not using wood as it was for medical use, but our literature search didn’t find anything too plausible to support the claim (most references referred to a...

Antimicrobial coating for my new, selfmade garden table?

I’d recommend eating off plates instead, they can be washed removing the worry about cross-contamination. The claims they make are impressive, I can’t see the studies that support them on their website, you’d think of they had them, they’d be using them. Osmo UV oil is good but… it’s not for...

    Router bit size

Maybe not the best, but there’s nothing that that says you can’t

    Router bit size

It’s for centring the guide bush and/or aligning the router to a cut line. No router is “made for” table use, they all have a number of design flaws that make them sub-optimal for that, but I can’t think of any that would not do it, certainly a Trend T-5 and T-11 are both fine for it

Clay pipes, lead gutters, no PTFE tape on compression joined copper? I bet you’re surrounded by polymers in your “house”, but it doesn’t fit your narrative to admit it.

    Router bit size

In my “house” MDF is stable, easy to paint and repair and never warps. I bet you’d not have any new fangled plasterboard or concrete in yours hey, just mud and straw?

    Router bit size

Using MRMDF you will be able to machine and finish it just fine, I’d probably use 25mm MDF for the base part. Finishing it is easy once you know how. Bond the top part on and use like normal

    Accurate table saw needed

Just how much 8x4 work are you doing? A good set of trestles and a rail saw will do a good job of that, a table saw made for 8x4 will not fit in your space even if you took everything else out I think

    MTF slab top

CNC design do some affordable ones. I’m not sure if Makita tracks are the same size as Festool ones but some of the tables with sacrificial insets don’t align with Mafell rails, but it’s an easy modification. benchdogs do a nice fence for repeated cuts which you can pop on and off very easily...

Guide Rail for Mafell KSS40 18 M bl

If you’ve got the standard guide rails and the fence for the saw, you can use the fence as an outrigger and turn the rail around so the saw cuts the other side supported by the fence, well away from the rail at any angle. Not sure if that helps though

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

It seems like some people want to post an opinion and get upset if others don’t agree with them, I can’t help but feel the internet Do you have an example to illustrate this?

    Tips for improving woodworking accuracy

Mostly you don’t need accuracy, precision on the other hand is really important, like getting all the parts the same size. Think of a set of Jenga blocks, the only thing that needs to be accurate is the length is 3x the width, thickness is academic but they do need to be precise in terms of...

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

Do you see the idea that tools have to be shiny and expensive to work being promoted, or is it that someone says “this is a great tool” and it happens to be shiny and expensive? If someone picks up a block plane made by Clifton/veritas/LN even the Chinese manufactures of higher quality tools in...

    Bubble wrap disaster.....

There’s lots of reports about bubble wrap and finish problems, I’ve had it too. I did once think it was possibly plasticiser coming out the bubble wrap and softening the finish, however it’s usually LDPE which doesn’t require plasticiser to make it soft, unlike PVC for example. The people who...

Good router bit for use with a Sled (sledge?)

Call it what you like. If the router isn’t attached to something that increases its mass, a catch will accelerate the router and there won’t… oh I’m bored.

Good router bit for use with a Sled (sledge?)

Yes, freehand. The router won’t be held down to anything, no increase in mass, no reduced acceleration.

Good router bit for use with a Sled (sledge?)

Are you thinking of a 1/2” shank cutter with a 50mm bit effectively freehand? I’d not personally, sounds a little too risky for my appetite. How much are you wanting to prepare?

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

There’s always been the “this is the best” brigade around, on here, in magazines, on YouTube etc… Amusingly they’ve often never tried another way, or follow up a profession about which tool is superior by asking a really basic question on how to use the one they’ve just purchased (so…. how come...

    Router plane

Do you have any data to support that? I’m pretty certain the density of cast iron hasn’t changed much in the last few thousand years. A new Record plane looks awfully similar to an old Record plane, a new Veritas looks a whole lot better.
