Four MDF Alcove Units - WIP

That seems to make sense my supplier tends to have all green boards up to 15mm and brown faced ones 18mm and upwards which would be suitable for table tops. Jon

    Kitchen Alcove (WIP)

Hi Olly I have just checked out how much they are at axminster - nearly a grand   I have actually had it about 5 years and i paid about £525 for it I think. Its a great tool but I would have to think seriously about buying it at todays cost. Jon

    Kitchen Alcove (WIP)

I dont think you will regret it if you get a domino Doug. Its expensive but it saves me loads of time on certain jobs and more than earns it keep. Jon

    Name that wood!

I would say its likely to be douglas fir. If you plane it a bit it has a distinct dissenfectant like smell. It could aslo be southern yelllow pine as the grains are quite similar. Jon

    Kitchen Alcove (WIP)

Had a few hours in the workshop Today so i started to make the bottom carcase. Its Made from 19mm Oak Veneered MDF and jointed with Dominos. I then used the domino again to fix the face frame onto the carcase. I usually leave the top of the face frame a little proud And then use...

    Kitchen Alcove (WIP)

Hi doug the domino fixings range from 5mm X 30mm to 10mm X 50mm. The domino jointer is similar to a biscuit jointer but has a rotating spiral cutter rather than a blade. I find I dont use the biscuit jointer since getting the domino jointer. Are the plastic butterflies you used made by...

    Kitchen Alcove (WIP)

I thought I would post some pictures of a fitted alcove i am working on. Started off by making the beaded face frames for the cabinet. The alcove is going to fitted out like a dresser with a painted bottom section and an oak top section which is set back from the bottom. I started with the...

    3 Phase Vs Single Phase

I agree with bob these are trade machines and are more likely to be wanted in 3 phase and i cant see why a single phase one would hold its value more. I had a look at these once (moretens) and looked a decent machine for the price. The major disadvantage over a full size moulder such as a...

Random Orbital Sanders - Is it Just Me?!

Does the hollows follow the summer / winter growth rings on the timber. I have found in the past that the difference in hardness between the summer and winter growth can produce a slightly uneven finish. Jon

    Power feeds

I would usually do it as trousers suggested i.e. ripping out of a wider board. There are a few potential problems with running a 15 X 15mm piece through the spindle. The piece could easily fall down into the tool well and jam and the feeder cant get close enough to the work piece without the...

    Ashley Iles Factory

I gave Ashley Isles a ring today to find out the details of the factory visits. The tours last about 2 hours and they need to start by 11 am at the latest. They can be anyday Monday to Friday depending on whether they are at a show etc. The week after Easter Tuesday 14th to Friday the 18th...

How to use a belt sander?

What type of belt sander have you got? If your model has a sanding frame as an accesory you will find you will get good results using one. I have a festool 75e and sanding frame and can happily sand veneered surfaces and boards with it without the sander digging in. Jon

    Anyone got a ......?

Hi John You could try sam vickers motor rewinds on riverside ind estate Boston. They have motors in stock or can get them for you. Looks a good extractor should be ideal for the table saw and RAS and any sanding machines. Jon
