    Lots of hot air

As an installer we always recommend three things before looking at renewable technologies... 1. Insulate 2. Insulate 3. Insulate Once you reduce your losses you can then look at an air source heat pump. The lower the losses the lower the temp of the water required to space heat and the lower the...

    Glue Nylon

I need to glue nylon on a stress loaded part. I'm not keen on "super-glue" types as if the joint fails it prevents regluing in a different glue. Ideally a penetrative type.

    The ethics of tropical hardwoods

Being from Africa and seeing forests cut down to stumps... a total ban seems to me to be the only way. Chinese timber buyers are no different to the other poachers in the market. They view natures cornucopia as theirs for taking and experience no remorse as it is simply a financial activity...

    Wood glue

I don't like Gorilla glue as it seems to suggest a good bond and then fails under test. When inspecting the joint the foam has covered the surfaces and set hard without bonding. Perhaps I didn't wet the surface well enough! Does anyone rate Cascamite?

    Axminster stock levels

Part of me imagines this just might result in sourcing stock locally resulting in stuff being made properly and providing jobs. “Made in the United Kingdom” not only means it’s made with the right materials but also provides work.

Checking and testing an electric motor Advice Please

I have a cement mixer which suddenly went wrong. There was no leak to earth or overload trip. It doesn’t rotate normally and then if it’s given a bit of help it struggles and turns in small slow jerky movements.... I have tried to replace the capacitor with a similar one, to no avail. This is...

    Heating the workshop

If you use a fuel to generate heat you require incoming air to ensure a proper combustion. Aside from any CO and CO2 issues outside air is required to sustain a good burn, possibly compromising your room temp unless you can deliver this directly to your combustion chamber. This is often made...

    Hermes deliveries

Couriers HATE E’M. One once drove up to the gate, stopped momentarily and then drove away with my pipe fitting. I was working in the field on the other side of the gate and made eye contact with the courier. I found a number and called the courier company immediately only to be told the driver...

Curry's. - Do NOT buy anything from them at the moment.

Back to Curries.. we recently had. Telly from them which went wrong almost immediately. Curries weren’t helpful at all and passed us on to Samsung who were frankly sh*te. Wrong parts, wrong attitude, delays etc. Apparently a shortage of electronics. Perhaps the country of manufacture has had a...

    screwfix discount

Nice to see expressed justification for what’s been going on in my head for some time. My single greatest frustration with SF is their driving inventory cost down so they never have sufficient stock. Further if you buy some high value items they are supplied directly by the SF supplier so any...
