If only fretwork could draw a crowd like this......

That's a shame and I do feel for you, in my case a lot of my time was spent dealing directly with the public and at times did suffer from anxiety but when I retired like you I missed parts of it; however my view was that our time here is not very long and I did not want so spend it all working...

    the light of the world

That is a beautiful piece of work, what a talent you have. TBH If I had made that I would hang it on my wall and proudly show it to everyone who visited, no way would I part with it. It is just awesome.

If only fretwork could draw a crowd like this......

That's a great shame, work all your life and get no reward of retirement. I always said I would retire young and I was lucky enough to do so (although a sad occasion made it possible). Luckily my Dad (pictured above) lived until he was 93 and may have lived longer had he not lost his sight with...

    Pigeon scarer wanted

Think birds are a problem? I decided to plant a small wood at the top of my orchard, 12 Norway spruce and 12 larch, the damn rabbits ate 23 of them leaving me with one larch tree!

My next door neighbour tried this, he scrounged all my old cover CD's.

If only fretwork could draw a crowd like this......

I will tell you something that I know you won't believe because I didn't! When I was at work retired people used to go on about how they have less free time now that they have retired, of course I always poured scorn on them, "how could you possibly not have more time?" I used to bluster, but...

    Pigeon scarer wanted

TBH I don't think anything really works. birds are pretty clever and soon realise whether something is a threat or not.

    Pigeon scarer wanted

They won't scare the birds! I make whirligigs and have 5 different ones scattered about my garden doing various things, people stop and admire them and children love them especially my Wallace and Gromitt one but the birds take no notice of them! :D

If only fretwork could draw a crowd like this......

This picture is of my late father around 1920, he is using my grandfathers Hobbies Imperial fretsaw and is surrounded by some of the item he made. What annoys me is that when my grandfather died in 1965 I could have had that Hobbies Imperial machine but I already had my Dads Hobbies A1 machine...

If only fretwork could draw a crowd like this......

This is a picture of the national Fretwork exhibition in 1912 and the Hobbies stand, it's hard to imagine just how popular fretwork was then and look at all the young faces in the crowd, today's youngsters are just not interested in any sort of practical hobby they just want to be playing games...

    the lords prayer

Large fretwork designs both by Hobbies and Handicrafts often use a sort of surface dovetail joint to join the pieces then hid them with a moulding or fretted panel/overlay, I do this sometimes on pieces I make even smallish ones, it makes the work easier to handle you don't waste so much wood...

    the lords prayer

No, it could quite well have been available earlier, but 1919 was I believe the first time it was issued with Handicrafts magazine, I would suggest that it's earliest appearance would be after 1907 though as that is the year Frank Skinner resigned from Hobbies Ltd and founded the Handicrafts...

    the lords prayer

Not sure if you read my first post in this thread? I do have this plan although it is in poor condition, however if you have some parts of the plan I may be able to scan some parts that may be missing. Because the plan is in poor condition I avoid looking at it as each time it falls apart more...

    Hegner scrollsaw

I been a fret-worker for most of my long life and have never used a foot switch so I would not say it is a must however imagine it is one of those things that once you have used it you would never want to be without. IMHO the quick clamp is the No 1 essential item.

You can also buy blades from Mikes workshop, he is a scrollsawer himself and sells the quality flying Dutchman blades. He offers a quick post service to the UK. https://www.mikesworkshop.com/blades.htm In my own opinion I have not found any difference with these blades than the Niqua blades...
