    FD Blades

You don't need to buy blades to try in huge quantities Hobbies sell them in packs of 12 blades, in any case IMHO there are only two types of blade that you need and that is the standard skip tooth blade and the better reverse tooth blade, in fact you could get buy with just a small range of...

    Variable speed or not

I would not buy a scroll saw without variable speed, variable speed makes it much easier for cutting thin wood or intricate patterns and of course metals, it also makes it much easier to learn for a beginner to scrollsawing.

    Blade size?

Believe it or not I have all those sizes in my stock plus a few very heavy ones, I mostly use sizes 3, 5, 7 and 9, I normally keep a size 9 in my Diamond saw for heavier cutting and use the Hegner for more precision work. Some of the blades in my fretwork cupboard were made by the Original...

    Adhesives for patterns

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000 ... ROKL5A1OLE This spray adhesive is Re-positionable and is easy to remove after cutting, however it is quite expensive, I use those cheap pens containing water based gum myself, a pack of 4 are available in various pound shops but you do have to work...

Huge, but fascinating Scroll Saw !

That is an amazing machine, I would have thought that without a lower blade clamp the blades would crumple? The thing that struck me was that they have made a really sophisticated machine but then just attached a bog standard electric drill to the side, one would have thought that for a machine...

Scroll saw comes out of retirement :D

You don't leave the ends sticking out they are filed/sanded total flat with the wood and polished/varnished over like flush rivets! If done properly with fatter screws so the ends are larger after filing it can look decent.

Scroll saw comes out of retirement :D

If the wood being fixed to is thin I actually do as you say and file the ends off, I sometimes let the brass ends show and make them a feature, if done carefully it can be quite neat and attractive.

Scroll saw comes out of retirement :D

Martin for fixing the hinges you need tiny brass wood-screws they are available right down to 1/4" x 1 or 2 gauge or you could use small brass nails cut off to size. Screws are better. I always keep a range of tiny brass screws in my screw cabinet for my fretwork projects.

    Scroll saw

The only thing I know about them is that they were marketed by the revived Hobbies company and sold from around the early 1970's until about 1992. It was quite a basic machine by today's standards and was based on the top of a treadle machine with the treadle part removed and a motor fitted...

    Hobbyist Scroll saw advice

The Axminster hobby http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-ho ... scroll-saw is a copy of a 'cheapo' saw that has been sold for several years under many different brands, I have a Wickes version, it's OK for doing the odd bit of curved sawing much like a motorised coping saw in my opinion. The...

    metal cutting blades

I use the Niqua metal cutting blades from Hobbies. http://www.alwayshobbies.com/tools/hand ... saw-blades I have cut brass with them but you have to be very careful as it is easy to break the blades cutting metal. You can buy them other places too, just look for metal cutting fretsaw blades.

Here's an idea, has it been posted around before?

Back in September 1998 the Guild of Master craftsman published the first issue of a magazine entitled The Scrollsaw, it was an excellent magazine devoted 100% to scroll-sawing. I bought every issue and still have them but unfortunately the sales were just too low and after a couple of years it...

    scroll saw learner

With respect John I don't agree with your comment, I don't think it has anything to do with bragging about better machines, the fact is that there are some really good scroll saws available that happen to run smoothly, do the job accurately and with efficiency, they are an absolute joy to use...

second hand hegner buyers beware !!

This is the piecework or quick release clamp.............. http://www.hegner.co.uk/Quick-Clamp-for-Piercework It really is essential in my opinion, it is expensive for what it is (usual with Hegner parts) if you are handy you might be able to make one yourself from odds and sods in the...

second hand hegner buyers beware !!

Hello Ian (is it Ian) :) Regarding your saw. 1) not much you can do about throat size. 2)The motor on Hegners are Induction type you cannot use an independent speed controller (it has to be part of the motor circuit) However many people manage perfectly well on single speed. 3) The Quick...
