    Cheap 12v Vacuum cleaner

To be honest I am surprised that at 12 volts and 60watts it is powerful enough as a dust extractor? But if it works well for you then fair enough. I am in a minority here but I rarely use an extractor with my scrollsaw, I use them with my other machines but never felt the need with the scrollsaw.

    Arrrhhh ! blade broke.

Nothing you can do will stop you breaking blades from time to time, especially with the thinner blades, in fact I am amazed that they don't break more often considering how delicate they are. I don't think you ever get used to the massive 'shock' you get when a blade does break, I have been...

    British society of Fretworkers

It was quite popular for a time, now known as bevel cutting, Hobbies published quite a lot of pattern sheets for antofret. I have done a bit and it does take a bit of getting used too; cutting in one direction only but you can achieve some interesting effects. The patterns carried a small...

    Birch ply substitute?

I agree with Profchris, obeche is useless for fretwork, much too soft, I have used spruce for toys and other fretted items but it can have split out at the rear of the cut, however it is cheap to buy and readily available. Have you tried Model shops/ They often sell small wood panels. (I...

    British society of Fretworkers

You could also join the hobbies league, but before you could join you had to cut out a test piece and send it to them for appraisal!

    British society of Fretworkers

This is a page from the programme of the British Society of Fretworkers exhibition held in London in 1911, How different it was then! Look at how many men and boys are in attendance, it just shows how popular the hobby was back then. My grandfather actually exhibited some of his fretwork at...

    ........

Thanks Brian, I have not done any videos recently nor been on here, we have had a dreadful time during 2016, in March I lost my uncle (a woodworker who I was really close too) then as you know our lovely GSD passed away suddenly in June then to finish my mother passed away suddenly a few weeks...

    ........

101% brilliant, I don't know how you do it! The fantastic item you made for us when we lost our GSD has pride of place on my study mantle-piece where it is admired every single day, it really is treasured by us.

    Scroll sawing plywood

Sometimes with thin plywood it pays to layer cut even if you want just one, that way you will at least get one perfect item with no observable cut out or kerf. IMHO 3/32" is very thin to cut singly on a powered fretsaw. if you don't want to waste plywood just layer the 3/32" on the top of some...

    sawing plywood

You will always get some splintering no matter what wood you use or type of blade, as others say reverse tooth blades do help and considering that they cost very little more than normal blades they are well worth using, however do bear in mind that only the bottom 3 or 4 teeth on the blade point...

Need advice on a Hegner saw.

It's difficult to advise just looking at photos but here are my observations -: It is an older model, not sure how old but it's certainly over 17 yrs. It does not look as though it has had a very caring owner as the saw is very knocked about. most of us paid a lot for our Hegners and cherish...

If you were to design a scroll saw, what'd be your priority?

I have been using fretsaws for 50 years and I have never got used to the shock of a blade breaking, every-time I practically jump out of my skin, of course it's actually caused by the spring at the back which stops the motion of the blade on breakage, without it the broken end of the blade would...

    whirligig propellers

Have a look at my video here. https://youtu.be/mc_Ow7KqLlg I cut out a circular block about 3" diameter then using a bandsaw with the table set at an angle (you can use a scroll saw or hand saw) I cut slots into it any number from 3 to 6 is my normal number according to the power required and...

    Hobbies suffolk

I may be wrong but I have a feeling that the Museum is no longer part of the present Hobbies Company, it was started by Robert Stroulger (one of the son's of Ian Stroulger who reformed the Hobbies company after it was wound up in 1969) But I understand that Hobbies is now run by another family...

    Hobbies suffolk

You are very lucky to have a Suffolk machine, they are as rare as 'hens teeth', I have never seen one. I don't know much about this model other than it was introduced in 1917 and as far as I know they did not make that many and certainly by 1927 it was no longer in their handbook. I have a...

    Nettlefolds wood screws galore!

This is a picture of the collection of Nettlefolds wood-screws i have just rescued from my late uncles workshop, his children were going to bin them so I offered to take them on not realising how many he had squirrelled away! All his life he worked at a factory making farm machinery and when...
