    Porch Pirates

My mother advised by a senior copper years ago to keep a few masonry nails and a claw hammer on her bedside table. She was going to hang a picture so had a reason to have a hammer in the bedroom should the time come she cracked someone over the head with it.

    Porch Pirates

My neighbour, a builder, told me his friend, another builder, went to the police after he'd had £1000s of tools stolen from his van. He had a cctv image of the scrote walking up to the security camera, smiling and sticking up a middle finger, and as the bloke was known to him his name and...

^^^ A little later than that. We lost several £thousand in Portugal. A Portuguese bank manager and his assistant trousered it, They knew under UK law at the time the account was illegal, they denied all knowledge of its existence knowing we were powerless to do anything about it. My family...

You appear to have forgotten the IMF being called in a few years before when Labour ran out of other people's money.

    Two QUICK Shop TIPS:

I read that gin sales dropped by a £billion last year. There were something like 160 companies (probably more now) making/selling gin and only eleven iirc actually distill, the rest buy either cheap gin or neutral spirit, throw a handful of flavourings in and triple the price. There is one...

    Two QUICK Shop TIPS:

Best value is Black Bush when it's down to £27 - £28 a litre on Amazon. No Scotch at that price can touch it. I have camelcamelcamel to warn me.

Is there a definitive pillar drill - new or used - that is better than the Bosch PBD40 for the same money?

Korean or Taiwanese is usually fine, steer clear of low end Chinese.

    Two QUICK Shop TIPS:

According to a famous whisky writer years ago (I can't remember the name) the only thing other than another whisky that should be added to a whisky is water. This was in the days all whisky was bottled at 45%, and when asked how much he said it should be "as the dew upon a rose".

    Scotch broom timber properties

Plante genêt - planta genista. The symbol of the Plantagenets was a sprig of broom. Damhikt.

No doubt Jacob will be along soon to say she's a lying Tory.

    Tool collecting addiction

I have about 25 different pliers and grips. A neighbour looked in my workshop at nine or ten tool boxes and asked if I had enough - I don't know whether she believed me when I said I had another sixteen indoors.

    Gotten

Errors of spelling or syntax don't bother me too much unless they quite obviously alter the meaning of what is written. I get irritated at the mixing up of compliment and complement - that often does alter the meaning.

    Tool collecting addiction

Someone once told Ivor, the old chippie I used to work with that power tools must have saved him a lot of work. No, he said, they make work. How's that, then? I take on work now I've I've got the power tools that I wouldn't have touched before. :)

    Electric vehicles

In China the "night soil" was used as manure - that's why the Chinese don't tend to use salad crops and vegetables uncooked.

Really? (Three circular saws, three routers, three angle grinders, five power drills ... )

I have a couple of dozen chisels I could do without. Surprising, really - last time I thinned them out I sold a couple of hundred.
