Are standards necessary / useful in the UK?

Well, I think the question posed here intends to ask whether standards are best formed from the ground up or mandated from on high. The value of standards themselves is obvious, how they're formed and instituted isn't. Standards typically either improve efficiency (replaceable parts) or reduce...

    Wadkin ASG10 crosscut/mitre fence

If it's a 3/4 x 3/8" slot, incra mitre fences will work, that said you may be paying a good percentage of what you paid for the saw on a mitre fence.

    workshop lighting

TLC has some great led battens, knightsbridge CCW. Has 3 colour temps to choose from. Well built. Includes a driver. driverless leds are not good in a workshop, as they are very susceptible to voltage fluctuations (common un a shop) and will flicker. They're steel.body so need earthed. Smart...

Bow in sheet after ripping on panel saw

Looking for my first table saw

I can recommend keeping your eye out for a good used machine. I got a hammer B3 for £1900 from ebay last year. Wadkin table saws (preferably with the aluminium rip fence) can be had cheap too and are fantastic.

Lack of Woodworking programs on TV

Assuming you're referencing the guy with face tattoos on "The Chop" (Darren Lumsden)? Load of nonsense, Sky doing the usual corporate arse-covering. Case of demand for racism far exceeding supply.

Planer/Jointer vs Thicknesser, which one should I buy first?

Hello namesake :D I had a DW733 with a shelix cutterhead. It was fine really, planed lots of dry elm and sold it on. Likely saved about £10 worth of sanding pads and about a days sanding on one job easily (though took about a day to install ha). Only issue is depth of cut is lessened on wide...

Now happy with the Table saw.

Looks fine to me. I've got a 4hp hammer and it's still pretty picky about matching material and blade. Ripping spruce can be much like sawing wool, it's fibres are more resistant to shear force and build up in the kerf. Wouldn't worry about it!

So, do most of you use sketch up for your designs?

I can only think in sketchup these days. The ability to tweak a design, adjust component dimensions and adjust colours etc. on the fly is too handy for the design workflow. Quicker iteration = better product. Plus modelling parts often follows a similar process as to how they would be built, at...

    Coffee beans recommendation?

Top recommendation is Artisan Roast (https://www.artisanroast.co.uk/), roasting is very consistent and high quality, 1kg quantities are good value but also because I know some folks who work there. Origin (Origin Coffee Roasters | Speciality coffee, education & locations), Square Mile (for top...

    Festool Clamps losing "grip"

I filed the inside of the hole on the sliding part, figured the corner likely has to be somewhat sharp, and widening the hole would only increase the angle of attack. Worked for a while, then filed the grooves into the rail and has been fine since. Easily worth it over buying new.

    LED lights

I can recommend these lights from TLC. 4ft 22w CCT LED Batten Fitting - Tri Colour. Colour option is handy. Also uses drivers so isn't as susceptible to voltage drops or fluctuations caused by machinery.

Bandsaw dust extraction that actually works - 85% efficient!

    Hammer N4400 Bandsaw noise

I know it's frowned upon to bring back an old thread but the solution wasn't identified successfully. The brake board has two potentiometers, one for brake time and one for brake current. These are easy to adjust, aiming for 3-5 seconds stop time. Too much current can damage the windings and is...

    Startrite TA165 Blades?

They are aren't they? Lotta carbide on there.

    Startrite TA165 Blades?

I've got a couple 5/8" bore 235mm blades from Wealden Tool's clearance section but no longer have the saw they went in - looks like they still have quite a bit of stock of 5/8" blades - Circular Sawblades

Lots of Timber slats workflow advice

Can see Accupanel aren't veneered on the sides. I need to get into making acoustic "wood" wall panels.

Sounds like it's a big lump of pitch pine no? I'd happily offer if I were nearby.

    I saw this on Facebook

Feel like this sort of thing could work without the contrast of sapwood and heartwood. With the bark, bright sapwood and dark heartwood it's very distracting, a prime example of function following form. It's a floor and the beauty of a good floor is nested within its function.
