    In Cannel Gouges

I've never come across the term 'incannel' before (and I have 60+ yrs of wood work behind me!) - so I dialled it up on Google, and guess what the first site I came on told me not only that it is what I call an outside curved gouge, but also how to sharpen it. So strictly I cannot criticise as...

    Worktable "lubricant"

Interesting - I work with my brother on occasions who has been a professional for 35 years, and when asked about this in the past he avoids such lubricant like the plague arguing that the friction helps to prevent the wood going through the machine too fast giving thereby giving a cleaner finish...

    Drummond B lathe

Just out of interest, SM, is that the round bed Drummond? I ask because as a small child my father had such that was treadle driven. My brother now has that machine. I remember using it in my teens to turn Meccano parts, but by then my father had changed it to a motor drive.

That wiouldn't have been at the large electronics company on the north side of the city would It? The norm on the site that I worked at was to use the workshop's metal cutting bandsaw watched by a government official.

    'Rotten' window - painting?

I was resigning myself to having to replace a 1990's DG window and went to measure it up only to realise that it hadn't really rotted at all and all that I was looking at was flaking paint and 'black' wood - OK that latter is the first stage of rot but the wood is perfectly firm - just...

    Land rover

I was heavily into climbing in student and post student days (1960/70's), and I read this thread with amusement as I got a 2nd hand one about 1970 - I just forwarded the link for this thread to two of my friends from those days who too had LR's then as well. I made this comment "It was the...

    Laburnum source (now resolved thanks).

Having followed this thread through and mentioned it to someone professional in the trade, his reaction was that one of his major concersn is the poisonous side of laburnum. Yes, we know about the seeds, but also with yew, does the poison extend into the wood?

    Old Joiners for sale? (doorhandles)

That saw is a coffin saw !!;) I'd never seen one till recently when I went to a local joiner who was also the local undertaker - never used now, and in hindsight I missed the trick of asking him if he could have made my mother's coffin.

Picking a 3 phase motor star point - practice

Gremmy - I'll watch your progress with interest. I did this on the motor for a Graduate lathe some 15 years ago and don't recollect have that putting me under stress. However the 3 ph. Cooksley 12" P/T I bought recently has caught me out in that the thicknesser drive is 2 speed implemented...

    More Wood Identification

Only relevent as an example of teak. My brother is a small guage railway enthusiast and recently obtained some 30" guage ralway vans with teak bodies - probably from one of the munitions depots. They will have stood outdoors since they were built possibly before WW2 - and the 2" thick teak is...

What would you do with this?

I've successfully filled 'features' like this in the past with sawdust and superglue - colour with coffee grains if necessary. But that was on dry wood and wouldn't work here, as epoxy would not either, as apart from a poor bond, the wood will move as it dries and the filling won't.

Wrong length bandsaw blades for disposal

In my excitement a number of years back of getting my first bandsaw and then discovering Tuffblades, I misordered 3 blades to 2240mm instead of 2440mm. I came across three blades the other day in their original packing - tried again to convince myself they were the right ones and realised I'd...

    Bathroom ceiling.

Insulation , insulation, insulation. The reason for the mould is condensation on the walls/ceiling because the walls are so much cooler than than rest of the space. Yes extraction is important, but I had mould through out this house originally, (18th century cottage nr. Edinburgh with an...

    screwfix discount

My brother is a professional wood worker so uses tools hard - properly but expects them to last. He was asking in SF a wee while back about an offer that was on, and the guy behind the counter warned him off saying so many of the offers are bult with plastic parts instead of metal to get the...

    Sealant / Primer for OSB

Xtian - I take it for reasons I can't immediately see, that you haven't considered Coroline or Onduline. Absolutely no bother to install, very long lasting and lays onto OSB without any further protection. Rob
