    Which Lathe to buy

I've a friend who has a Graduate - he was fortunate that he was at the school when it was being dismantled and got the Graduate for £50. I personally think the Graduate is the "flavour of the month" and is seriously over hyped. There are plenty of other equivalent period lathes about which...

    Fruit WIP

Oops - helps if you read the captions and not just look at the pretty pictures!! Sorry about that, and smart thinking to use a clove - all we need to do now is to bake it and we have baked apple with a clove in it!! OW

Help wanted! Belt change on union jubilee.

Hi Pete If you don't get any answers, try the guy who runs this site :- www.lathes.co.uk You will at least get a photo copy of the manual from him - allbeit rather expensively for a copy !! It is however an excellent site on all things related to all lathes. OW

    Fruit WIP

Many thanks Richard - the original pictures and wood guessing game whetted the interest and these pictures answer all but one of my questions ! You mount the half turned fruit on the screw chuck to turn the stem end - do you just leave the screw hole unfilled when the fruit is finished ? I'm...

    Cleaning up a faceplate

The job is done ! Not made any better by the fact that the sandpaper seems to have been glued on with Evostik, so heat (200C) softened it but didn't melt it as I'd hoped the wax would have done. But then thinking about it, hot wax would have been quite difficult to apply and impact adhesive...

    Cleaning up a faceplate

Thanks Paul At over 100 sq ins to scrape off, I'm all for trying something that isn't so labour intensive. Plus this is Al and any form of chipping and scraping is going to take it out on the surface. I do have a contact who probably has access indirectly to a large enough metal working...

    Cleaning up a faceplate

Thanks guys for your comments and advice. The sandpaper in question is seriously coarse and is all lumpy so it's got to come off, if nothing else so that I can use the plate. Machining it off on the lathe is a no-no - the sandpaper bits will get everywhere and will do damage to any friction...

    Cleaning up a faceplate

I've a 12" faceplate that came with my 2nd hand lathe - unfortunately some previous owner has stuck coarse sandpaper over it. I suspect that the glue might be hot wax - I tried a hot air gun on it but the heat is just not enough though some lumps of glue on the edge did soften. My next...

    Machinery setup advice....

It's always good when you feel that you are one ahead of the pack - strictly two as I ordered Maskery 4 & 5 two days ago, and hoping for delivery tomorrow. I'm comfortable with a table saw - have been since my Dad built one 55 years ago - but the bandsaw is a new experience and guidance on...

    Anti-fatigue matting

Great stuff - get it from Costco as Oryx says - and having such a covering has made me far more conscientious about keeping the floor clean. Also good for a tent floor. OW

    New Video: Berger style scoop

Many thanks, Bob - pure magic !! Just fascinating from a novice's point of view to see you handling the tools in both a spindle turning mode and then in a bowl. A couple of quick (I hope) questions - olive is very dense; is that essential for this type of turning ? Will any drive centre cope...

    Feeling Fruity!!

Richard Apart from the challenge to the novice of making such fruit, and these set a horribly high standard; lovely. Does someone do a video on making these ? Anyway coming on to your photo of holding a bowl on a faceplate, how do you finally remove the running hole in the base of the bowl ...

    Feeling Fruity!!

As a novice who has access to quite a bit of cherry at the moment , I'll guess that !! With the tip of it being 'native' we can now do it by elimination !! OW

    Melamine lacquer problems

Intrigued by the melting beeswax - on the basis that beeswax melts at something like 46C, what would the wood do if heated to that temperature ? I was then wondering how it is done - an oven at 50C (digital thermometer) and lots of chunks of wax in the bowl ? I have a design for a wine...

    new workshop

.....and unless you are lucky, the electricity board will take most of your 8k to fit 3 ph. If you can get 3 ph machines that much cheaper than single phase then electronic inverters are not difficult to fit. In most cases it is easier to go that route than fight the mechanics of changing...

    It's so cold that...

Well now we are going OT ! Kye ???? Mr Google didn't give me anything, not even limiting him to UK pages. Kye + custard lead me of all things to a forum on Jamie Oliver's site - custard with brandy but there may be more to it than that! It seems my interest lies in food at the moment - I...

    starting a workshop from scratch

I'm not quite sure how we avoided it - mainly because we do have a competency requirement in place I think. Your comment about consumer protection is a load of cobblers I'm afraid. The whole Part P was con on the part of the electrical installation industry; there was no evidence at all that...

The up's and downs of home spalting!!

I do realise after reading this thread that beginner's luck does apply here in that I have access to a whole fallen beech tree that is spalting. The trouble is that I have the material but absolutely zero level skill to be able to use this bonanza !! The thing that has surprised me is that I...
