First bowl - finishing advice please

Pete Now that we have firmly drifted Off Topic, what sort of proportion of brass to glue to make it an effective appearance ? Rob

First bowl - finishing advice please

A perfectly reasonable highjack :D - as I would like to know the answer to that too! I do actually have a source of brass filings too. Rob

First bowl - finishing advice please

Hi Duiker I didn't say this is only my second bowl! Give us a chance on the learning curve and then I'll have a go with the brass, etc. Thanks for the idea Rob

    Beehive construction?

Actually I find statements like that thoroughly patronising and inaccurate; groups of enthusiasts on any topic are all 'a breed apart' - that's what makes them enthusiasts - get a bunch of them together, from teachers through to steam nuts, and you'll never get a word in edgewise Jim, just be...

Drying wood - yet another question !!

Thanks Chas The one third longer bit is, for these wood chunks anyway, predetermined by the fire log supplier, but it is a good guideline. Rob

    So many lathes??

Hi Elaine - and welcome to UKWorkshop and it's forums ('fori' if you old like me and have been 'traditionally' educated!) I possibly - probably - come from a slightly different stage of development from many of the very knowledgeable and experienced guys contributing here in that I am still (I...

Drying wood - yet another question !!

I've seen a comment somewhere recently that if the pith of the timber is removed by splitting and removing it, that inhibits (or reduces?) cracking. I get hardwood logs for the fire and some of them look interesting, particularly bits that have come from crotches, and have been split along...

First bowl - finishing advice please

Hi Richard "I always think that Oak goes well with an oil finish. Chestnut Finishing oil is as good as any: " I've ordered up some Finishing Oil - couple of queries 1 Do I sanding seal first - cellulose or shellac ? 2 How do I apply the oil - cloth/brush? with the work piece running ...

    Steb Drive Centre ?

Hi John I did just wonder - but that is the problem of coming from a metal turning knowledge base. But it does throw up just what a rip off wood turning lathes are in that I can get one for the metal lathe at the same sort of price which will give a flat reading on the dial gauge. OK that...

repairs to M and T joints on chairs

Yes, I will admit to that being an assumption, but the 'PVA' family is pretty big nowadays and has a range of capabilities. What lead me to suggesting it is a PVA type is the colour, the water solubility, the setting time, the smell ... do you want me to go on ? I don't think that that...

    Steb Drive Centre ?

Going slight OT on the query, but related to it - what centre accuracy do you guys expect off your chucks ? If I run a Steb, or any other centre in the lather drive shaft (MT2), I'm meauring less than a thou off centre, but if I mount a centre into the chuck, and this is a centre that I have...

Anyone know what this is for?

That sounds distinctly plausible - for opening up the holes in linen etc. for the embroidery ? Rob

repairs to M and T joints on chairs

Having worked for a period with my cabinet maker brother and had to do something similar, I now look on chair design with a pretty sceptical eye. For any chair that is going to have to work hard, it must be adequately braced in the lower frame. All to often chairs are just not designed to be...

First bowl - finishing advice please

JJ - you don't by chance know a bunch of Brits down your way that sell seeds (B & T World Seeds) - near Aigues-Vives. Seems you've been having a bit of winter down there ! Rob

Any Woodturning courses in East Lothian or Edinburgh area

Hi Green The Broxburn Club is in the Strathbrock Centre - http://www.strathbrockcentre.co.uk/whatson.htm I know the opening photo isn't all that hopeful, but I think if you look at Thursday you will see Rab working on one of his creations. Effectively the Club is open as long as the Centre...

First bowl - finishing advice please

But the grapes would fall through the hole, John ! :D :D I'll read Chas' sticky and see what to do. If you can get a finish on that bowl then I'm just being a woose !! That's impressive. I know of a long fallen elm with magnificent burrs - it's just getting them ! Rob

Any Woodturning courses in East Lothian or Edinburgh area

Keith You don't say where you are - it may well be that I may be able to turn (!) up someone in Broxburn who knows turners in your direction. Rob

First bowl - finishing advice please

Hi JJ - it is of course very interesting - did you not spot the ooops! "130m dia" - quite some bowl for a beginner. It should of course be 130mm !! A photo is possible though I haven't discovered how to do it here yet - but it is just a shallow bowl in oak that looks rather cracked...

First bowl - finishing advice please

I didn't realise when I started this 'lump' of oak that it was burry - catspaw? - so the bowl has interesting marks and small gaps through the wall. Its shallow - 130m dia by 60dp. What does the collective advise for polishing please ? And is anyone aware of a tutorial somewhere on the net on...
