    One family's solar story

One difference in the way batteries are used in Australia with gridtie systems is that they are used more for self powering your house at night, and only if the demand is too high for the battery bank or they are depleted does the house switch back to the grid, and in the mornings the PV array...

    One family's solar story

I run a (temporary) offgrid system here to power my shed and caravan (still building the house) and have been in the solar game here in Australia since the 1980's (offgrid) and gridtie (2004) Panel life is expected to be probably half a century or more- my first own offgrid house has its panels...

    New electrical supply debacle

At least here in Australia, its not really worth the bother, just oversize the array to compensate (I bought 18kw of ex gridtie panels for under $2000 Au) but yes, some people do do it- but its not really that cheap- they put aluminium or copper plates behind the back of the panel, resting...

    New electrical supply debacle

You would be surprised at just how little sunlight you need to get at least some power out of solar these days- One of my offgrid arrays that ran my caravan when I was still building my shed usually put out about 35A at midday on a sunny day, but would still deliver about 18-20A on a 'grey...

    One family's solar story

The BYD BBox is quite popular here in Australia, a modular storage system that can be easily expanded later if you find you need more storage, and considerably cheaper than the Powerwall from Tesla (plus as the BBox uses LiFePO4 cells, it basically lasts about twice as long as the Powerwall with...

Help on How to disassemble a Full Size Snooker Table

Agree with Ozi, I have twice had to move one(back in the 1990's I used to work as a furniture removalist) and it is a LOT of work involved- done incorrectly it can indeed injure you... badly... There are special lifters used, but they aren't cheap to buy, and unlikely to be available to rent...

    New electrical supply debacle

No, but like everywhere else, it isn't an 'either/or' situation- for most of the year the panels work just fine which means that the total diesel usage is massively decreased- when they don't work they use the diesel generators which are already there... But with every litre of diesel needing...

    New electrical supply debacle

If I want to go to the carwash, or (ugghhh) McDonalds, or the local Bunnings hardware store- its a 1hr drive- each way- at 110kmh for much of it... in my ute, thats 10l per 100km... 18l at 2.40 per litre... I do have a small town closer (only 10km away)- it has 1500 people in it, a single...

    New electrical supply debacle

Actually, it works pretty much anywhere- we Aussies use it in Antarctica... The UK does get less than Australia, but it still works - you just need more panels to compensate for the lower insolation (the UK gets about 2.5kwh/m^2 per day, while where I am I get about 5kwh/m^2 per day- however...

    New electrical supply debacle

Solar is the way to go- my setup cost me $17500Au, 18kw (72x 250w ex gridtie panels) 12kw inverter, 6x 3kw solar controllers plus all the mounting bits etc- the grid connection was $42k Au, for a 8kw transformer out the front and a 500m run of poles down the driveway to the shed and house...

    Shed build, many many questions...

We don't worry about it for most sheds, but houses use a combination fiber insulation/silver sarking sheet under the roof itself- mine I had it installed as this will be a working shed, and we get 40C plus temps in summer- so insulation stops the worst of that That's the 'backside' of the...

    Shed build, many many questions...

I think it is local usage- here in Australia metal roofs are the standard for sheds (and since the 1970's houses as well) Especially colourbond (powdercoated) sheeting- my entire shed is made of it- 35 year guarantee- on the powdercoat not coming off or discolouring... the roof itself will...

    New electrical supply debacle

Lucky you get the two wire system- out the front here (rural Australia) we have a single wire on top of the poles (called SWER-Single Wire, Earth Return)- and although it works ok when the soil is damp, in dry conditions, it is quite common to have anything with motors in it damaged regurlaly- I...

2x electric leaf blowers/vacuums both not working. Anything obvious to check?

They are likely 'brushed' motors (ie universals) and if they stand too long, you get copper oxidisation on the commutator... If you can get access to the fan easily (many just unclip for cleaning) then with it unplugged obviously, give it a few spins so the brushes cut through any oxide layer...

    DIY lathe

Most drills are really quite 'sloppy' on their centers so give poor results... (been there, done that- not good results...) For a small 'lathe' like you sound like you want, I would look at at 'diy' if they don't come up on the local markets that often- my first was literally 100% homebrew-...

Well the The camera could hit its full speed (I didn't have any way if actually doing a speed test, as I wasn't going to drag the laptop and the inverter down to the gate lol (its internal battery died years ago- its well over decade old!!!) The LR has its own internal antenna, indeed it has...

Like phones and their 'fast chargers' the POE injectors have increased the power, but as the cables are the same, you can have the same amperage (limited by the cable size). but increased wattage by upping the voltage... (W=VxA for those who aren't into the electrickery stuff on the side) (you...
