Severe wet rot problem on older 5x3 single garage. Is this salvageable?

Not quite as bad as my mums old garage- it had about 8ft literally 'hanging in the air' like that- it was actually quite easy to fix (even for a then 13 year old like me) although probably not quite 'up to standards' these days, it is still standing lol Just used a treated timber replacement...

CNC milling machine expandable bed size

Angle mounting is fairly common (one of the local CNC workshops that makes custom doors has a 'tilted vertical' CNC router) but a 'lift up to the ceiling' would work too,,, Years ago there was a mate of mine that had a combination model railway and slotcar set that literally filled a double car...

    One family's solar story

Well, the LYPs I run come as a single cell, rather than a '12v battery' (although LFP is available as '12v' or '24v' batteries as well as single cells afaik there are no manufacturers making LYP 'batteries' at all, there's only a handful making LYP at all), with an inbuilt BMS in the battery as...

    One family's solar story

That's another reason I went the LYP- they can handle a charge rate of up to 3C, and a max peak discharge of up to 10C (as eventually they will be powering not only the house but the workshop as well, with a lathe, mill etc to fire up...) With my 400Ah cells, thats a max charge of 1200A, and a...

    One family's solar story

That's one of the biggest advantages of the LYP lithiums- they can handle heat better- charging up to 85C- if my batteries are at 85C- then they are the least of my worries lol) and can be charged down to -40C... The LFP have a smaller temp range, between about -20 and need to start reducing...

    One family's solar story

EFB is basically the old 'marine grade' battery- ie a 'semi deep cycle'- kinda a cross between the standard 'starting' L/A battery and a deep cycle... With a theory capacity of 3kwh, you effectively have only 1.5kwh of actual storage anyway and for long life expectancy, even less... (and still...

    One family's solar story

It actually is a problem with L/A however- they do need to be fully charged on a regular basis (and even slightly overcharged occasionally for flooded cells) to agitate the electrolyte, otherwise plate damage will occur... Lithiums on the other hand can be left for months partially discharged...

    One family's solar story

Nope- you won't damage them by not fully charging that last bit, and indeed by not going into that last bit (where it swiitches over to CV mode, and the BMS starts 'charge shuffling' you can extend the lifespan of your battery pack even (at the expense of slightly less stored power in the...

    One family's solar story

All L/A (regardless of type) are poor performers in comparison to the LFP/LYP lithiums (far less actual storage than lithiums for the same rated Ah) and economically don't make sense any more for any but the smallest/cheapest setups (a home setup is a substantial installation and using L/A in...

    One family's solar story

Where that 'slowdown' is in the charging- that is the bulk charge is over, and the BMS is 'charge shuffling' to equalise the cell voltages- this is the bit where it is best to avoid being....

    One family's solar story

I suspect they must be using that 80% DOD as '100% of rated capacity- actually hitting a 95% DOD (5% left) of actual capacity is dangerously overdischarging them... and would reduce their lifespan significantly.... (it would be nice if they all standardised their measurements lol) BYD...

    One family's solar story

There are some rather dodgy numbers being thrown around- LFP/LYP cells are rated for 5000 cycles at 80% DOD, and 7000 plus cycles at 70% DOD (like all battery packs, the shallower the DOD is, the more cycles you get out of them- a 50% DOD on LFP or LYP cells will be out past 10000 cycles...

    One family's solar story

I am offgrid these days (on a 'temporary' system at the shed that runs the shed and my caravan, while building the house) that supplies 100% of my power here- only 1.5kw of panels (3 250w facing north, and 3 250w facing west), charging the 20kwh lithium (LYP) battery bank that feeds the 12v...

    One family's solar story

I had a east/west split for a while at the old house (due to the roof design) and it actually made almost identical daily totals as a neighbours all north facing system (same install company, same equipment, even the same installers a couple of days later) on sunny days the outputs were almost...

    Sharpening twist drill bits freehand

Did the same as an apprentice elec fitter- we had to do it (by eye) until we were good at it... Still sharpen by hand even today lol (sharpen the edge at the correct angle for the material, then 'roll and twist down' to put the 'back curve' on it- after a while it becomes second nature lol) Its...

    Email account has been hacked.

You can normally get the 'online assistant' (which is totally useless imho) but you can get an actual person via it (use the 'contact us' down the bottom of the page ie this is one of their 'how to' pages if you lose control of your account at Get help with a hacked account, go right down the...

Why do we have so many issues with software programs

My house is very dark, it has no windows.... Been using Ubuntu since the late 2000's, got a single XP machine for some stuff that demands XP, had a win7 laptop for a few months, but its now Ubuntu as well For those that can't handle change, it is probably the best in terms of user friendliness...

    Alternative to Bench Vise

My old vice (inherited from my grandfather!!!) was out of square AND worn at the tops of the jaws- not a lot but enough that it didn't grip properly, although it still had plenty of 'meat' in the grip pattern, it closed up at the bottom before the top... and because it was nearly always gripping...

    Alarm and security cameras Help

Social media tends to do a better job than the police in locating intruders from camera footage, our local FB group started posting footage from peoples cameras- and in a small country town, it was easy to 'name and shame' the scumbags involved in a series of breakins- they then found they were...

    Motor for Watchmaker's Lathe

Not a particularly difficult job to set up, but I would have thought a 1/3HP motor was a little over the top for the job myself... And of course you will need a fairly hefty PSU- 0-24V at 15A- available but not particularly cheap (about $175-200 Au or about 100 pounds) The motor itself would...
